11 clubs seal Champions League progress as Haaland's campaign ends

mirror.co.uk, 24 November 2021, 22:57
Liverpool, Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea are among 11 teams who have secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League, but Erling Haaland's Borussia Dortmund are out

Eleven teams have secured safe passage into the last 16 of the Champions League - including all four English sides.

Manchester City secured their place at the top of Group A with a victory over PSG at the Etihad.

Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus cancelled out Kylian Mbappe's opener, but the French side are also through after other results went their way.

Liverpool, who had already qualified, saw off Porto at Anfield 24 hours after both Manchester United and Chelsea had also picked up three points.

United and the Blues will need to win their final group games to ensure they finish in top spot however.

But whilst they can begin planning for the last 16 in February one man who won't be there is Erling Haaland.

The prolific Norwegian, who has made himself at home on the Champions League stage, will not add to his competition tally of 21 goals after Borussia Dortmund were beaten by Sporting Lisbon.

It means, even if there was a huge goal difference turnaround, they will not progress having lost 3-2 to the Portuguese side across their two fixtures.

Sporting could be joined in the last 16 by two of their native sides - Porto and Benfica - but they are the only side from the Primeira Liga to guarantee progression with a game to spare.

Haaland, who is currently injured, may yet have played his last game in Europe's elite competition for the German side, who could see the forward seek pastures new in the summer.

The Bundesliga will have a last 16 representative though in 2020 winners Bayern Munich, who have maximum points so far.

13-time winners Real Madrid overcame a slow start to progress from Group D along with Inter Milan.

Carlo Ancelotti was at the helm for the La Decima victory back in 2014 and will have hopes of winning an unprecedented fourth Champions League.

Inter can still secure top spot on matchday six, but would need to win and Madrid to lose.

Juventus are the second Serie A side in the last 16, even though they were dealt a harsh lesson by the European Champions at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Ajax meanwhile won for a fifth time in Europe this term when they beat Besiktas, the second side to do so in this year's competition

Erik ten Hag again looks to be building an impressive outfit having guided the Dutch giants to the semi-finals in 2019 and they are again emerging as dark horses.

Barcelona, as things stand, could be the biggest casualty of the group stages. They need to win at the Allianz Arena to guarantee a place in the last 16 with Benfica two points behind.
