Enzo Maresca's side were no match for Manchester City at Stamford Bridge, although they got off the mark under their new manager at the second time of asking on Thursday, defeating Servette 2-0 in the first leg of their Europa Conference League qualifying playoff.
Meanwhile, Wolves succumbed to a 2-0 loss to Arsenal in North London on the opening weekend, although their recent feats against Chelsea give their fans cause for cautious optimism.
Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.
Head-to-head record
Previous meetings: 117
Wolves wins: 43
Draws: 30
Chelsea wins: 44
Despite the current gulf in stature between the two clubs, almost nothing can separate them in the head-to-head column, as Chelsea's 44 victories is just one more than Wolves (43) have managed since their inaugural affair in 1906.
Another 30 battles between Wolves and the Blues have ended in a share of the spoils, but the West Midlands outfit have often had the West London side's number in recent years, doing the double over a Mauricio Pochettino-led side in 2023-24.
That season, Wolves subjected Chelsea to a chastening Christmas with a 2-1 Molineux victory on December 24, before the Matheus Cunha show took centre stage in a six-goal Stamford Bridge thriller, where the Brazilian scored a fantastic hat-trick.
Cunha's treble saw him follow Robin van Persie, Kanu and Sergio Aguero as the only visiting players to score a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, prior to which a stunning Matheus Nunes effort saw Wolves win 1-0 at Molineux in April 2023, a result that ruined Frank Lampard's homecoming.
With three successive triumphs under their belts, a Wolves win on Sunday would see the West Midlands side beat Chelsea four times on the spin for just the second time in their history, having previously won five in a row between 1938 and 1947.
All in all, Chelsea have just a paltry one victory to show from their last eight scraps with Wolves in the top flight, a 3-0 success in the capital in October 2022, and not since the pre-COVID days of 2019 have they actually prevailed at Molineux in the top division.
Lampard led the Blues to a thrilling 5-2 triumph that day, but that is the only victory that Chelsea boast from their last six Premier League trips to Molineux; they have accrued just one point from the last available 12.
With a total of nine goals against Wolves, the revered Jimmy Greaves is the highest scorer in this head-to-head, closely followed by Jimmy Murray's eight for the West Midlands outfit.
