Torinovs.Hellas Verona

sportsmole.co.uk, 4 April 2025, 08:35
Five games unbeaten in Serie A, Torino will try to improve their prospects of a top-half finish by beating Hellas Verona on Sunday.

Both teams drew on Monday evening, with Toro striking back to take a point off Lazio, while Verona were held at home by fellow strugglers Parma.

Match preview

Having seen his team fall behind near the hour mark at Stadio Olimpico, Torino coach Paolo Vanoli sent on two substitutes who then helped salvage a 1-1 draw against high-flying Lazio.

Yann Karamoh sent Cristiano Biraghi away down the left wing, and the latter found goalscorer Gvidas Gineitis with a deflected cross, as Toro's undefeated streak continued.

This calendar year, no team has drawn more games in Serie A (seven, level with luckless Venezia) and the Granata are continuing a recent tradition of being tough to beat - particularly in Turin.

Across the last couple of campaigns, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic has recorded at least three more clean sheets on home turf (18) than any other goalkeeper throughout Europe's five leagues.

Indeed, only Scudetto contenders Napoli have conceded fewer home goals in Serie A this season, with Toro having recently won three of their last four fixtures at Stadio Olimpico Grande.

Considering results since the start of 2025, Vanoli's men would rank seventh in the standings with 19 points from 12 matches, albeit a mid-season slump in the weeks prior means they still sit just outside the top half.

Following a 3-2 away win in September's reverse fixture, Torino are unbeaten in 11 league games against Verona, so they will now expect to taste more success as hosts.

Hellas have lost their last two top-flight clashes with Toro: only once before have they suffered three straight defeats to the Turin club in Serie A, and not since 1970.

While Sunday's hosts are renowned for their solidity, Verona own the division's worst defensive record; yet they have kept a clean sheet in both games either side of the international break.

After beating Udinese 1-0 away from home, the Scaligeri returned to action on Monday, with a goalless draw against relegation rivals Parma. So, they could now record three straight Serie A shutouts for the first time in some 25 years.

Paolo Zanetti's side had previously lost four games out of five while conceding goals at a rate of two per game, but their capacity to pull off occasional wins has kept them at arm's length from danger.

With eight rounds remaining, Verona sit seven points above the drop zone, leaving their destiny very much within their own hands.

Team News

Torino are still missing Alieu Njie, plus long-term absentees Perr Schuurs and Duvan Zapata, but Paolo Vanoli should have an otherwise fully fit squad to choose from this weekend.

January signings Eljif Elmas and Cesare Casadei have both made a big impact in Turin and they are set to start once again, with the latter partnering Samuele Ricci in central midfield.

Eight-goal top scorer Che Adams is favourite to lead Toro's attack, with Antonio Sanabria consigned to the bench.

Meanwhile, Verona recently welcomed their main marksman back from an injury layoff, though Casper Tengstedt missed a good chance to score the winner on Monday, after appearing as a substitute.

The Benfica loanee - who has six league goals this season - will vie with Daniel Mosquera, Amin Sarr and Dailon Livramento for selection up front.

Paolo Zanetti is again without injured quartet Davide Faraoni, Oumar Niasse, Abdou Harroui and playmaker Tomas Suslov, the latter of whom may be sidelined until May.

Torino possible starting lineup:

Milinkovic-Savic; Walukiewicz, Maripan, Coco, Biraghi; Ricci, Casadei; Lazaro, Vlasic, Elmas; Adams

Hellas Verona possible starting lineup:

Montipo; Ghilardi, Coppola, Valentini; Tchatchoua, Bernede, Serdar, Duda, Bradaric; Tengstedt, Sarr

We say: Torino 1-0 Hellas Verona

Seven of the last nine league meetings between these teams in Turin have ended all square - but the hosts are surely set to prevail on Sunday.
