Sunderland teammate 'star-struck' as Jobe Bellingham makes Championship history

talksport.com, 3 March 2025, 17:10
Jobe Bellingham made Championship history in Sunderland's last outing.

The Sunderland star became the first player born after the first Championship game was played on August 7, 2004 to make 100 appearances in the league.

The 19-year-old midfielder achieved the feat during Sunderland's 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday last Friday.

Black Cats teammate Chris Rigg admitted that he is left 'star-struck' by Bellingham's natural ability.

Both Bellingham and Rigg were recognised at the North East Football Writers Association Awards on Sunday evening.

The pair shared Young Player of the Year accolade for an impressive year which has set themselves at the very top of Championship talent.

At the awards, Rigg said: "It's always good to get noticed for your accomplishments over the season.

"It is a prestigious award, so I am very happy and I'm also happy to win it alongside a fellow team mate as well."

On his teammate Bellingham, Rigg added "He's been unreal, to be honest.

"I think he's improved so much over the last couple of years. Sometimes you get star-struck by him, just the things he does week in, week out, day in, day out.

"I think if he does maximise how good he is day in, day out, then he can go right to the very top."

On Sunderland's Premier League ambitions, Rigg said: "I think we are so confident that we can get in that race. I know that we've hit a patch, but I think the team that we've got, we want to win every game.

"I think that's crucial coming towards the back end of the season. I think we've just got to put it all out there and see what we can do," he said.

Bellingham, the younger brother of England and Real Madrid star Jude - has attracted the attention of Premier League clubs including Crystal Palace after his impressive displays with the Black Cats.

The young playmaker has represented England at all levels up to under-21. He moved from boyhood club Birmingham City in 2023 to join his current side.

He even adopted the name 'Jobe' on the back of his shirt to avoid being connected to his brother constantly.

Boss Tony Mowbray explained the decision: "He's trying to create his own identity.

"He doesn't want to live off the back of his brother's name; he wants to be the footballer that he is and show people what he can do."

Sunderland are currently fourth in the Championship which places them firmly in the play-off running.

Whilst it may be hard to close the gap on leaders Leeds United, who have an 11-point lead, play-offs with those around them could mark a return to the top-flight for Sunderland.
