Spursvs.Leicester

sportsmole.co.uk, 24 January 2025, 11:09
Two crisis clubs on the hunt for their first Premier League win of 2025 go head-to-head on Sunday afternoon, as Tottenham Hotspur host Leicester City in the English capital.

Ange Postecoglou's strugglers are out to avoid a fourth straight loss in the top flight, where they languish in a lowly 15th place in the table, but their knockout successes continued in Thursday's 3-2 Europa League win over Hoffenheim.

Meanwhile, the Foxes have regressed quickly under Ruud van Nistelrooy's stewardship and find themselves bottom but one in the standings, only bettering whipping boys Southampton at present.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 121

Spurs wins: 61

Draws: 22

Leicester wins: 38

From 121 previous meetings between Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City, Spurs' success rate sits at close to 50%, having prevailed in 61 of their competitive contests while only suffering 38 defeats down the years.

Even fewer clashes between Leicester and Spurs have ended level - just 22 - although one of those stalemates was fought at the King Power Stadium in August 2024, where none other than Jamie Vardy saved the Foxes' bacon.

That closely-fought battle on the opening weekend of the 2024-25 Premier League season marked Leicester's second straight game without defeat against Tottenham, whom they previously slaughtered 4-1 in February 2023 before being demoted back down to the second tier.

However, Tottenham otherwise had Leicester's number during the Brendan Rodgers era, winning four straight games against the Foxes from May 2021 to September 2022, all of which were goal-laden classics.

Each of those four victories for Spurs saw both teams score, there were at least four goals in every game, and the two sides shared a remarkable 23 goals across those 360 minutes of football, one strike almost every 15 minutes on average.

Leicester do not have to go too far back for their most recent success on Tottenham's turf, though, prevailing 2-0 during the behind-closed-doors days of December 2020, and not since a Division Two clash in 1948 has this contest finished goalless.

Outside of league action, Tottenham have trumped Leicester in two major finals, beating the Foxes 2-0 in the 1960-61 FA Cup showpiece to complete a domestic double before a 1-0 triumph in the 1999 League Cup final.

Spurs legends also dominate the individual goalscoring column in this fixture - Harry Kane (19), Jimmy Greaves (13) and Son Heung-min (10) are all in the double figures - but perennial Big Six nemesis Vardy boasts nine strikes of his own against Tottenham.
