The Saints will remain rooted to the foot of the Premier League table no matter what happens on Saturday, having fallen to a seventh straight top-flight home defeat in last weekend's 3-1 loss to Bournemouth.

In contrast, Brighton have consolidated a top-half ranking by virtue of slaying Chelsea 3-0 last weekend, their second win on the spin after also eliminating the Blues from the FA Cup just six days prior.

Often squaring off in the Southern League during the early 20th century before pitting their wits against each other in the top flight, Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton have now met on 80 occasions in all tournaments.

While there may be a gulf in quality between the two squads at present, it is the Saints who lead the way in the head-to-head column by some distance, earning 36 victories compared to 23 for the Seagulls.

Another 21 matches between Brighton and Southampton have seen the two clubs shake hands on a draw, including at the Amex in November 2024, although the Saints were controversially denied a winner by a VAR call in that 1-1 stalemate.

Thanks to the intervention of technology on that occasion, Brighton have now avoided defeat in each of their last six Premier League ties with Southampton, whom they did the double over in the 2022-23 top-flight season with a pair of 3-1 successes.

December 2020 was the last time that Southampton managed to take all of the spoils from this encounter, as a Danny Ings penalty propelled the Saints to a 2-1 victory on that occasion, but an identical loss in March 2021 ended Southampton's eight-match unbeaten run in this fixture.

Interestingly, each of Southampton's last four wins in this head-to-head has come away from home, and the Saints have not beaten Brighton at St Mary's since Rickie Lambert scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 Championship triumph in 2011, going winless in their six Premier League games at the ground.

Brighton have only visited West Ham United on more occasions without ever losing (eight times), while Southampton have only welcomed Nottingham Forest to their turf without ever winning on more occasions (seven times).

The aforementioned Lambert is the second-highest documented scorer in matches between Brighton and Southampton with four efforts, just one shy of Glenn Murray's five.
