Samir Nasri had Pep Guardiola apologising after being screamed at about his weight

talksport.com, 26 April 2023, 12:46
Samir Nasri has revealed he put Pep Guardiola in his place and forced an apology out of him after being blasted for being overweight.

The ex-Arsenal star played just one competitive match under the Spaniard when he took over as Manchester City boss in 2016.

Nasri was shipped off on a season-long loan to Sevilla, before being permanently sold the following summer to Turkish side Antalyaspor.

The Frenchman was left out of two pre-season matches in China when Guardiola arrived to City due to being unfit - which the 52-year-old publicly revealed.

And Nasri, who won two Premier League titles with the Citizens during his six-year stay, has now opened up on his disagreements with Guardiola after he recovered from a serious hamstring injury.

Speaking to L'Equipe, the 35-year-old said: "I went into it with him from our first meetings.

"On the first day, he summoned me to his office and asked me: 'What do you want to do?'

"I tell him: 'It's up to you to tell me if you're counting on me.' He replied: 'I'm counting on you if you're really well in the head.'

"Then I do my first training, everything is going well, he is happy with me.

"The next day, Pep summons me again and there he yells at me about my weight.

"He found out because we were weighed every day. There, I said to him: 'Reduce your voice, don't yell at me, I'm not a child, I'm 29 years old.

"Maybe my holiday was an escape for me, a time to do what I wanted to do because I was coming out of a difficult season and because in my personal life a lot of things happened.

"And there, Pep answers me: 'It's true, I'm sorry.'"

It wasn't just Nasri Guardiola took exception to over weight issues, with club legend Sergio Aguero declaring he was dropped and fined for being too 'fat'.

He remarked: "In the first season we were between fourth and third [in the Premier League] and he said: 'I left you out because you turned up fat this week'.

"What was I going to say? He was right. These things happen.

"You come across a little bit of chicken for example, then you are going to be 50 grams over.

"If your ideal weight is 79-80kg and you were 80 kilos and 100 grams you would be fined and you wouldn't play. He said it in a good way.

"At that time, I didn't really have his confidence. But I was always very respectful to the coaches…"
