Postecoglou says he can't ask for patience as unique stat highlights Spurs woes

talksport.com, 8 December 2024, 21:11
Ange Postecoglou acknowledges that he can't call for patience at Tottenham amid growing scrutiny regarding his position as head coach.

The admission comes after his side went four games without a win as they suffered a defeat at home to Chelsea on Sunday.

Spurs went 2-0 up against the Blues but collapsed to a 4-3 defeat at home, a seventh Premier League loss in 15 matches this season.

Postecoglou's future as head coach has come into doubt after he was booed by fans at full-time of their 1-0 loss to Bournemouth three days earlier.

Further questions will now be raised over his position as Spurs extended their dismal run to one win in their last five league fixtures.

Speaking on the club's current state of affairs to talkSPORT after the match, Postecoglou said: "Yeah, look it's it's not the best situation.

"I just said seven defeats in 15 is not great, no disguising that but there's still plenty of games to go.

"What we have shown this year is that you know when we play well and you know we've got some bodies out there where we can beat anyone.

"So we just got to keep grinding away till we get some bodies back and hopefully get some consistency."

Postecoglou then added: "We got fans who were great today. You know, they got behind the team, especially after the start. So that's all you could ask for and I can't ask anyone for for patience, right?

"That's all I can do is as I said, keep working out of the pushing on to make a successful football team."

This isn't the first time Spurs have surrendered a 2-0 lead before leaving a game empty-handed having done the same in their 3-2 defeat at Brighton in October.

Their latest woes have been further highlighted by the fact that the defeat to Chelsea is the 11th time they have lost in the Premier League after leading by two or more goals.

This is at least four times more than any other club in the history of the competition, and the first at home since 2001 when they lost 5-3 to Manchester United.

There was positivity for Spurs ahead of kick-off as they welcomed the returns of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven at centre-back.

It looked to be a victorious evening in north London only five minutes into the game as Dominic Solanke scored after a Marc Cucurella slip.

Dejan Kulusevski put Spurs in dreamland moments later as his low strike doubled the advantage against a sloppy Chelsea.

However, Jadon Sancho responded for the visitors with an excellent finish from outside the area that flew past Fraser Forster.

Chelsea equalised midway through the second half with Cole Palmer's penalty following a late Yves Bissouma challenge on Moises Caicedo.

Enzo Maresca's side completed the turnaround when Enzo Fernandez scored his third league goal in four matches with a half-volley.

A second Palmer penalty, this time an audacious panenka, sealed all three points despite Heung-min Son's late consolation.

Spurs saw both Romero and Van de Ven go off with injuries, with the former doing so after just 15 minutes of play.

They sit 11th in the table after 15 matches with just six wins and 20 points from a possible 45 to their name.

Postecoglou's side remain way off the pace in the race for European qualification, a prospect that may already be out of sight.
