Peterboroughvs.Wycombe

sportsmole.co.uk, 6 March 2025, 23:58
In a match that could impact League One's race for promotion, in-form Peterborough United are set to welcome high-flying Wycombe Wanderers to the Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday.

The Posh are on a five-game unbeaten streak ahead of this weekend's clash, while the Chairboys have fallen behind in the title race and will be desperate to stay ahead of the chasing pack in the playoff spots.

Match preview

Darren Ferguson's Peterborough have endured a mixed season so far and had a particularly difficult festive period in which they lost five and drew one of their six matches between late December and early January.

However, the Posh have won three and drawn two of their five most recent games, including a 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Huddersfield Town and a cup win on penalties against Wrexham, though they did play out a 0-0 stalemate with Blackpool on Tuesday.

The point they earned against the Seasiders left them 17th in the table ahead of this weekend, but it is important to note that they are only five points ahead of Burton Albion in the relegation zone.

That being said, the hosts will be confident of putting at least one more point on the board considering that they have not lost at the Weston Homes Stadium in 2025, even if they are up against one of the best sides in the division.

A win on Saturday could take Peterborough as high as 15th, leapfrogging both Mansfield Town and Wigan Athletic, though given that 20th-placed Bristol Rovers are just two points behind them, they could find themselves one spot above the drop zone by the end of the weekend with a loss.

Meanwhile, Mike Dodds's Wycombe will be disappointed to have dropped nine points in their last six League One matches, the exact number of points they trail behind top-of-the-table Birmingham City.

Last week, the Chairboys were narrowly beaten 1-0 by the Blues at St Andrew's, where the six-pointer was decided by a first-half strike from Taylor Gardner-Hickman and the second-placed club had Xavier Simons sent off.

Dodds's side did follow up that loss with a 2-0 win over Burton, but the three points they took from that game has only left them with a two-point lead on third-placed Wrexham, who are in better form and are putting pressure on in the race for automatic promotion.

With a desperate need for points this weekend, the visitors will be concerned that they have won just one of their last five league matches away from Adams Park, and with two draws against relegation-candidates Crawley Town and Cambridge United in that stretch, fans will be aware that there is no guarantee of a better outcome against the division's weaker sides.

Wycombe won the reverse fixture 3-1 back in October, and a repeat of that result could create a five-point cushion between the Chairboys and Wrexham, and potentially close the gap at the top of the pile to six points.

Team News

With a five-game unbeaten run to protect, and having conceded just two home league goals in 2025, Peterborough centre-backs Oscar Wallin and Sam Hughes will be keen to put in another solid showing in front of goalkeeper Jed Steer this weekend.

Further forward, midfielder Hector Kyprianou will patrol the centre of the park alongside Archie Collins, while striker Bradley Ihionvien will be supported by Cian Hayes and Abraham Odoh out wide.

As for Wycombe, they will welcome Xavier Simons back into the squad after he served a suspension against Burton, though he is likely start on the bench while Luke Leahy and Josh Scowen line up at the base of midfield.

Elsewhere, left-back Daniel Harvie remains out with the injury he picked up against Birmingham on March 1, so expect Adam Reach to start in his place on Saturday.

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:

Steer; Dornelly, Wallin, Hughes, Edun; Collins, Kyprianou; Hayes, Mothersille, Odoh; Ihionvien

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:

Norris; Grimmer, Low, Taylor, Reach; Scowen, Leahy; Onyedinma, Humphreys, Udoh; Kone

We say: Peterborough United 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers

With strong home form and a commendable unbeaten record that has even been maintained against even the division's promotion-chasing clubs, it is difficult to picture Peterborough losing this weekend.
