Neal Maupay takes brutal swipe at Paul Scholes after 'idiot' jibe

talksport.com, 11 February 2025, 21:00
Neal Maupay took a savage swipe hitting back at Paul Scholes after seeing a clip of the Manchester United legend calling him 'an idiot'.

A clip on social media showed Scholes and Jamie Carragher on The Overlap discussing inflammatory goal celebrations.

It was in relation to Myles Lewis-Skelly mocking Erling Haaland with his meditation celebration during Arsenal's 5-1 thumping of Manchester City earlier this month.

A fan in attendance could be heard asking: "What's the difference between that and when someone stole James Madison's darts celebration?"

In response, Scholes said: "Neal Maupay? Yeah, but he's an idiot. He just takes the p*** anyway, doesn't he?"

Responding to the clip, the French forward was never likely to turn a blind eye.

Reposting the clip, Maupay commented: "Surprised Paul Scholes can fit my name in his mouth alongside his daughter's toes," with a foot emoji.

The former Brentford, Brighton and Everton forward was referencing an Instagram story shared by Scholes' daughter, Alicia, that appears to show her footballing father with her toes in his mouth.

It's not the first time that Maupay has made headlines as a result of his brutal social media antics.

The striker is currently on loan at Marseille from Everton, but lived up to his pantomime villain reputation in December, joking on X: "Whenever I'm having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile."

He also famously trolled Tottenham star James Maddison last season by copying his famous darts celebration by doing it front of the Spurs fans.

Maupay then escalated the feud on social media when he wrote: "More goals and less relegations in my career than James Maddison."

When asked if there was any beef, Maupay told talkSPORT: "You need to ask him. From my side, I've got no problem with him or anyone. I know when I do things like that and we lose the game they will come for me.

"That's fine, I can take it. For me, football is a game and growing up I did the same stuff. I don't want to stop now."

He added: "I'm just having a bit of banter and a bit of a laugh, there's nothing deep. I like to give something, but I can receive as well.

"It's just fun. I like a bit of banter with my mates. That's just how it is, just because I'm a professional footballer doesn't mean I can't do it.

"I don't know how people react to it, but it's just me."

Maupay has managed four goals and four assists in 18 appearances on loan with the French side.

With an obligation to make the loan move from Everton permanent in the summer, fans might have seen the last of Maupay in English football.

That said, if you keep an eye on social media, he won't be far away.
