Monday's Nations League predictions including Spain vs. Switzerland

sportsmole.co.uk, 18 November 2024, 06:00
Croatia vs. Portugal (Monday, 7.45pm)

Concluding League A Group 1 of the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League with a top-of-the-table showdown, Croatia and Portugal butt heads at the Stadion Poljud in Split on Monday evening.

The Selecao have already confirmed their spot in the quarter-finals as group winners, but their hosts need a point to be absolutely sure of a position in the knockout stages.

We say: Croatia 1-1 Portugal

With Martinez already sending a few world-class troops home, and Portugal having nothing but personal pride on the line, it would not be surprising to see a hint of complacency creep into the visitors' game.

As a result, Croatia - as inconsistent as they have been - should be more than capable of accruing the point that they require to join the Selecao in the Nations League quarter-finals.

Poland vs. Scotland (Monday, 7.45pm)

Still with a slight chance of qualifying for the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals, Scotland will conclude their League A Group 1 campaign on Monday, when they meet Poland in Warsaw.

Both teams are locked together on four points from five games so far, but a Scotland defeat would result in automatic relegation; Poland can afford to draw.

We say: Poland 2-1 Scotland

These nations played out a five-goal thriller back in September, and more goals could flow in Warsaw, as the home side are particularly shaky at the back.

However, Scotland often fail to make the most of their chances and could ultimately be punished by their Polish counterparts.

Serbia vs. Denmark (Monday, 7.45pm)

Going head to head for a place in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals, Serbia and Denmark will clash in Leskovac on Monday evening.

With Spain distant winners, second spot in League A Group 4 is still up for grabs: Denmark will qualify if they avoid defeat, but their hosts can snatch second place with a win.

We say: Serbia 1-1 Denmark

Denmark can hold out for a draw against one of the lowest-scoring teams in League A, securing their spot in the Nations League's last eight.

Rarely able to click in the final third, Serbia will also have modest support behind them in Leskovac, which is far less intimidating than Belgrade's menacing Marakana.

Spain vs. Switzerland (Monday, 7.45pm)

Spain will round off their Group 4 of League A campaign in the UEFA Nations League on Monday evening, with the reigning champions, who are through to the quarter-finals, welcoming Switzerland.

La Roja have already topped the section and will be present in the final eight, while Switzerland's relegation to League B has been confirmed, with a disappointing campaign leaving them in fourth on just two points.

We say: Spain 2-0 Switzerland

Spain will be far from full strength on Monday, but their back-up players are also of a high quality, and we are expecting De la Fuente's side to have too much for an out-of-form Switzerland in this Nations League contest.

Romania vs. Cyprus (Monday, 7.45pm)

Still uncertain of their UEFA Nations League fate after seeing their last match abandoned, Romania will welcome Cyprus to Bucharest on Monday.

The Tricolorii top League C Group 2 heading into the final matchday, but the fallout from Friday's controversial clash with Kosovo could yet threaten their promotion hopes.

We say: Romania 3-1 Cyprus

Last month's meeting demonstrated the gap between the two nations, with Romania recently enjoying a renaissance and Cyprus continuing to toil outside the world's top 100.

While the Tricolorii must await the outcome of a UEFA investigation into their penultimate Group 2 fixture, there should be no doubts about the outcome of their last one.

Kosovo vs. Lithuania (Monday, 7.45pm)

Kosovo return to UEFA Nations League action on Monday evening at Stadiumi Fadil Vokrri, entertaining Lithuania in the final matchday of Group C2.

The hosts walked off the pitch in Friday's clash with Romania due to alleged pro-Serbia chants from the home crowd, leading to the match being abandoned in stoppage time with the score tied at 0-0.

We say: Kosovo 2-0 Lithuania

Kosovo have created plenty of chances throughout their Nations League campaign, so they should have enough goals in them to see off the Lithuanians here.

The visitors have had a difficult time in the group and we expect it to be more of the same against a talented Kosovo team.

Bulgaria vs. Belarus (Monday, 7.45pm)

Bulgaria will welcome Belarus in the UEFA Nations League on Monday night, with both sides still having plenty to fight for as they prepare to take to the field for the final time in Group 3 of League C in the 2024-25 competition.

The home side are currently second in the section, two points behind leaders Northern Ireland, while they are two points ahead of third-placed Belarus, who will have their eye on a promotion playoff spot.

We say: Bulgaria 0-0 Belarus

The two teams played out a goalless draw in the reverse match in September, and we can see the same scoreline here, which would be enough for Bulgaria to finish second, while it would mean first for Northern Ireland even if they lose to Luxembourg.

Luxembourg vs. N. Ireland (Monday, 7.45pm)

Northern Ireland are on the verge of automatic promotion from their UEFA Nations League C group and will hope to clinch first spot on Monday when they travel to Stade de Luxembourg, where they will face Luxembourg in their final Nations League group game.

The hosts have two points, will finish last in fourth place and could be relegated automatically to League D, while the Green and White Army have 10 points from five matches after beating Belarus 2-0 on Friday, and a draw will in all likelihood be enough to finish first and earn automatic promotion to League B.

We say: Luxembourg 0-3 Northern Ireland

The visitors have been rampant goalscorers of late, and there is no reason to suggest that they would succumb to last-placed Luxembourg.

It would not be surprising if Northern Ireland scored multiple times on Monday and earned promotion to League B of the Nations League.

Liechtenstein vs. San Marino (Monday, 7.45pm)

In their fourth and final UEFA Nations League D match of 2024-25, Liechtenstein will hope to leapfrog San Marino and claim a promotion playoff spot when they host them at Rheinpark Stadion on Monday.

The home nation are last in third place with two points and must win in order to finish second and reach the playoffs, while their opponents are second with four points and must win if they are to be automatically promoted to Nations League C given first-placed Gibraltar have six points.

We say: Liechtenstein 1-1 San Marino

While San Marino did beat Liechtenstein recently, it is difficult to overlook their poor away record.

However, Liechtenstein have struggled for wins in recent months, and it would not be surprising if they were held to a stalemate on Monday.
