Mo Salah fights back tears after Champions League exit as fans fear the worst

talksport.com, 12 March 2025, 11:40
Mohamed Salah couldn't hide his emotions as Liverpool's Champions League dream ended.

The Reds fell to PSG in a heartbreaking penalty shootout on Tuesday evening, despite holding a 1-0 aggregate lead from the first leg in Paris.

It was Ousmane Dembele's goal after just 13 minutes that forced the tense tie into extra time, but despite both teams' efforts, neither could find the breakthrough.

In a nail-biting finish, penalties would ultimately decide who would move on to the quarter-finals.

Misses from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones handed the advantage to PSG, allowing Deziree Doue to step up and score the decisive goal.

The defeat dealt a heavy blow to Liverpool, especially to Mohamed Salah, who was seen wiping away tears after the final penalty.

Just last month, Salah stirred concern among Liverpool fans during an interview with TNT Sports, hinting at a potential farewell.

"I want fans to remember that I gave it all to the fans," he said.

"I gave it all to the city. I was here, and I wasn't lazy. I just enjoyed my football and gave it my all.

"I just want them to remember that I was here for eight years and I gave it my all."

When asked about his future at the club, he admitted there was no update: "In a very polite way, no."

One fan responded on X: "We're not ready for a goodbye just yet, Mohamed."

Another added: "Ouch, ouch, ouch, this sounds like a goodbye."

With Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk also nearing the ends of their Liverpool contracts, these three iconic figures all face uncertain futures.

Salah has been a vital force in the Liverpool squad that has surged to the top of the Premier League, with the Reds currently positioned 15 points ahead of Arsenal.

Liverpool have a quick turnaround, facing Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday, marking a crucial opportunity for a major piece of silverware this season.

Adding to Liverpool's woes, manager Arne Slot revealed that Trent Alexander-Arnold is now a doubt for the Carabao Cup final.

Alexander-Arnold's night came to an end in the second half when he attempted to intercept a pass but landed awkwardly on his right ankle and stayed down.

He cut a heartbroken figure as he lay there, pulling his shirt over his head while receiving treatment from Liverpool's medical staff.

Although he managed to get back on his feet, he could only limp away, taking an agonizing four minutes to leave the field and retreat down the tunnel at Anfield.
