Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer comments on Maguire and Shaw injuries

It proved to be a disastrous afternoon for Manchester United as their unbeaten start to the season came to an end and two members of their first-choice back four sustained injuries that forced them both to end their participation early.

Both Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire sustained injuries that will be a huge cause for concern for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was asked about the status of both players during his post-match media duties.

However, the Norwegian could not offer much news as he explained: "Sorry, I can't give you any updates, we will have to use today and tomorrow and Monday, or when we get the scans done, and see how they are."

The sight of Shaw limping straight down the tunnel would have concerned every member of the Old Trafford faithful, the England international replaced by Diogo Dalot just after the hour half mark - drastically hampering the kind of attacking threat United boasted down the left-hand side.

Things got worse for the Red Devils shortly after the interval, when club captain Maguire appeared to strain his calf while tackling Danny Ings.

Maguire was replaced by Victor Lindelof, though he did try and play on for around five minutes after the incident that caused the injury - the United skipper looked in discomfort the entire time.

The pair's injuries means United could be without two of their most important stars for a crucial run in October which sees Solskjaer's side take on the likes of Leicester City, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur with Champions League fixtures wedged in between.

Wednesday night see's United welcome Villareal to Old Trafford in the second game of their Champions League group stage - having succumbed to a shock defeat to Swiss outfit BSC Young Boys last week.

Solskjaer will know all too well how essential a win over Unai Emery's side is for their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.

The United boss was unhappy with the manner in which his side lost, having claimed that Kortney Hause's last-gasp header should have been ruled out for offside.

"[We are] Obviously disappointed because the goal is offside. It's unfortunate to have that decision against you."
