McTominay's Old Trafford future has been the subject of much debate for a couple of years now, as he has failed to become an undisputed starter for Erik ten Hag.
Nevertheless, the Scotland international still managed to prove his worth to the Red Devils boss last season with 10 goals and three assists from 43 games, before playing every minute for his nation at Euro 2024.
McTominay is now in the final month of his contract with the FA Cup holders, although Ten Hag's side do possess the option to extend his deal by a further year until the end of the 2025-26 campaign.
The Red Devils - who have not rewarded McTominay with a new contract since 2020 - could very well activate McTominay's extension just to protect his value, but there have been rumours that a new long-term agreement could be in the pipeline instead.
Man United to buy before selling McTominay?
As things stand, however, McTominay can leave Old Trafford for nothing in the summer of 2025, and a plethora of clubs - including Fulham, West Ham United, Newcastle United and Southampton - are all monitoring developments.
According to Football Insider, Man United wish to bolster their midfield department with at least one new name before making any decisions on McTominay, who has therefore been left in limbo.
While the midfielder himself is also waiting for Man United's verdict, all four interested clubs are being kept in the dark over the Red Devils' transfer stance, but Ten Hag's side are in no rush to decide his future.
Man United are prioritising other midfield exits before turning their attention to McTominay, as Donny van de Beek has confirmed on social media that he is on the way out ahead of an expected move to Girona, but the Red Devils are yet to make an announcement.
In addition, Casemiro is still being strongly linked with an exit after his underwhelming 2023-24 campaign, but the former Real Madrid man is only expected to receive offers from Saudi Arabia.
Which midfielders could replace McTominay at Man United?
McTominay's situation may be one of the most unpredictable ones inside Old Trafford right now, but the Red Devils might not need to pay a premium to bring in a replacement for the Scotsman.
Sofyan Amrabat - who spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Man United from Fiorentina - is apparently dreaming of coming back to England, and he could be available for just £12.7m due to the fact he is also in the last year of his terms.
The Morocco international enjoyed a strong end to the campaign after initially struggling to adapt to English football, but as is the case with McTominay, no decision has been made on his future either.
Benfica's Joao Neves, Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte and Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich represent more expensive targets for Man United, who are also after reinforcements in defence and attack this summer.
