Onana made two huge mistakes, including one in second-half stoppage time, as Man United were denied a famous win over Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final, with the match finishing 2-2.
The 2023 signing from Inter Milan allowed a Thiago Almada free kick to sail into the back of the net to give Lyon an advantage in the 25th minute, before he fumbled a strike from Georges Mikautadze into a dangerous area late on, which led to Rayan Cherki scoring.
Amorim said that he did not speak to Onana in the immediate aftermath of the incident, but the Portuguese has once again backed the goalkeeper, who has made a number of mistakes since joining the club.
"I don't know, that can happen. The best thing is to look at the goals and all the actions that Andre has had in the game and to talk with [goalkeeper coaches Jorge] Vital and Craig [Mawson]. This is the best way to help any player - to focus on the game, what happened, what we need to improve and then put the player [in] again," Amorim told reporters.
Onana made two mistakes in Man United's draw with Lyon
"No, I didn't see him, to be honest with you. I used these minutes to try to calm down, to come here to say the right things. But it's normal. And I think it felt really quiet, the dressing room. And that is a good thing.
"We draw away in Europe. That's always hard. The team is suffering, but we need to change that and we have the opportunity to change. So let's focus on that.
"We have training, go with Vital and we deal with that. So I'm really natural that can happen with any player. There's nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him. So the most important thing is to be natural. And then when the time comes, I will choose the best 11 to play. But I'm really confident in Andre."
There have been calls for number two Altay Bayindir, who is now fit after a recent absence, to be brought into the side, and Amorim now has a major decision to make for Sunday's Premier League clash with Newcastle United and next week's second leg with Lyon.
Scholes criticises Onana for disappointing showing in France
Onana was involved in a war of words with Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic ahead of the clash, with the latter branding the Cameroonian 'one of the worst goalkeepers in the history of Man United'.
"I think he was more so at fault for the first, a huge mistake, a little harder but he has to do better than that," Former Man United midfielder Paul Scholes told TNT Sports.
"On the whole [it is] the right result. Lyon played the better football and created more opportunities, but [after] scoring so late United will be disappointed andthey are in a good position at home, [so] they should still be big favourites but they will have to improve."
Onana has only kept 10 clean sheets in 56 appearances for Man United in all competitions, and there are question marks surrounding the 29-year-old's future, with Amorim privately believed to be keen to bring in a new goalkeeper.
