The fact that Real Madrid did not lose to Cadiz on Sunday was down to the efforts of Andriy Lunin.
Cadiz now face a nail-biting final match of the LaLiga Santander season, with their destiny out of their hands as they now depend on Real Mallorca and Granada.
Lunin turned in an outstanding performance, the highlight of which was his save from Alvaro Negredo's penalty in the second half.
The irony was that the goalkeeper played under Cadiz head coach Sergio Gonzalez during an ill-fated loan spell at Real Valladolid, in which the coach barely used him.
Lunin joined Valladolid in the summer of 2019 and only made two appearances during the loan spell, both of which came in the Copa del Rey.
It was such a disastrous move that it was brought to an end during the January transfer window, as Lunin played the second half of the season at Real Oviedo.
Controversial loan
Sergio made the decision that Jordi Masip was his No.1 goalkeeper, and he never considered changing his mind.
"[Andriy] Lunin knows the situation he has come into and that our goalkeeper from the start of the season will be Jordi [Masip]," he said.
"He has come to compete in tough conditions and he is a promising future goalkeeper."
The Ukrainian goalkeeper exacted revenge on his former coach in what was his second LaLiga Santander fixture in goal for Real Madrid.
Lunin's future remains up in the air, however, as there is no chance that he takes the No.1 spot from Thibaut Courtois.
Once the season comes to a close, Real Madrid and Lunin will make a decision on what is the best course of action to be taken over his future.
