Long-term United target changes transfer stance with player 'willing to leave'

talksport.com, 9 February 2024, 16:26
Frenkie de Jong is reportedly considering his future at Barcelona which could put Manchester United and Arsenal on red alert.

The 26-year-old is a long-term target of the Red Devils, and came close to being reunited with ex-Ajax boss Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford in 2022.

United and Barca agreed a fee rising to £73million, but the midfielder ultimately decided to stay on at the Nou Camp.

However the 54-cap Netherlands international could now depart Catalonia after five years, with it claimed he has been left dissatisfied by the club's ambitions and lack of silverware [one LaLiga and Copa del Rey title].

Speaking on Esport3's 'Onze' show, journalist Lluis Canut, who has a close relationship with the player's entourage, said: "De Jong has not given the green light.

"But he is no longer closing the door on leaving Barca as he did two seasons ago, when he had interest, especially from Manchester United, in going to play with the coach who had him at Ajax - Ten Hag.

"At the moment, De Jong is a little disappointed by the situation at Barca because he has not managed to turn the expectations that had been generated at the time when he signed into important titles.

"De Jong would be willing to leave Barca at the end of this season."

Spanish news outlet Relevo meanwhile have stated that the Blaugrana have 'doubts' over De Jong, and could look to sell him in order to boost their finances.

While the news will no doubt peak United's interest, Arsenal could also be tempted to make a move for the 2019 Eredivisie champion.

That is because in 2019, he opened up on his desire to play for Arsenal prior to joining Barcelona.

He told Voetbal International: "In my mind I have had the following list for a long time: Ajax-Arsenal-Barcelona, call it the Marc Overmars route.

The Gunners are believed to be in the market for a new central midfielder in what could be a busy summer at the Emirates.
