John Terry's reaction to Thiago Silva Chelsea's display in Tottenham win

mirror.co.uk, 20 September 2021, 08:38

Chelsea legend John Terry has highlighted the performance of fellow centre-back Thiago Silva in what was a resounding 3-0 away win over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur to continue Thomas Tuchel's sides unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

The 36-year-old Brazilian made history when he opened the scoring for the Blues as he became the second oldest Chelsea goalscorer in Premier League history - second only to Didier Drogba.

Silva rose highest from Marcos Alonso's corner to guide his headed effort beyond the despairing dive of Spurs skipper Hugo Lloris, opening the floodgates as Chelsea then spent the entire second half breaching Tottenham's defence.

A goal from half-time substitution N'Golo Kante shortly followed, before Antonio Rudiger confirmed the three points in added time - but it was the performance of Silva that caught Terry's attention.

The former Chelsea captain took to Instagram to say "Thiago Silva, what a man, what a player", while uploading a video of the opening goal.

His sentiments were echoed by Blues boss Tuchel, who heaped praise on the veteran centre-back after the game.

"Outstanding. He almost scored twice. He was so strong; Deliveries were good for his goals.

"We are very happy that he was able to score to open the game for us today.

"But the performance even in the first half was outstanding, fantastic. Well deserved, he was outstanding today."

While Silva was in fine form at Tottenham, Kante's introduction undeniably shifted the game in Chelsea's favour.

The Frenchman was brought on at the interval and within 15 minutes of his introduction Chelsea found themselves 2-0 up.

Kante provided the visitors with something their first-half performance lacked, offering a seemingly effortless transition between defence and attack while sniffing out any danger offered by the hosts.

The result means Chelsea have now made trips to the Emirates, Anfield and the Tottenham Hotspur stadium and come away with a total of seven points - the form of title challengers.

Tuchel's side currently sit top of the Premier League, but boast an identical record to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool after five games played.

Third-place Manchester United have the same points total as the duo above them, but are two goals shy of matching their goal difference.

Anything one of them can do, the other can do too. Not only has James Milner been drinking from the fountain of youth over the course of the last few years, but he has also evolved to become the closest thing football has to a Swiss army knife.
