David Ginola's best moments from chat-up lines to his Only Fools singalong

talksport.com, 20 November 2021, 10:16
Fans of talkSPORT can look forward to watching a favourite of the station when he takes part in I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here this year.

David Ginola has been confirmed has one of the contestants on the latest series of the ITV hit show which gets underway on Sunday, November 21 at 9pm.

The Frenchman is renowned for his charm, talent and good looks both on and off the football field.

He starred for both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, thrilling supporters with his gallivanting runs, great goals, and fantastic flair.

He also had short stints at Aston Villa and Everton during a wonderful career.

But, for those who aren't familiar, we take a look at the Premier League legend and some of his most memorable moments.

The football years

Ginola is now about much more, but we must remember that it all started on the football pitch.

After beginning his career with Toulon, RC Paris and Brest, the winger announced himself at Paris Saint-Germain where he became a hugely popular figure despite admitting that he was actually a fan of arch-rivals Marseille.

In 1995 his adventure in England started when he moved to Newcastle United where he perfectly epitomised the 'entertainers' tag that was placed on Kevin Keegan's side as they challenged for the Premier League title.

A transfer target for Bobby Robson at Barcelona, Ginola moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 1997 where he played a key role in them winning the League Cup in 1999 before being inducted into the club's Hall of Fame in 2008.

He then had less successful spells with Everton and Aston Villa, where he famously responded to John Gregory's jibe about being overweight by celebrating a goal and taking his shirt off to show his toned physique.

After retiring Ginola has established himself as a top pundit with several broadcasters including talkSPORT where he's produced some memorable moments.

He even flirted with the idea of running for FIFA presidency but withdrew his candidacy after failing to secure the support of at least five national football associations.

L'Oreal, acting career and his time on the catwalk

While being an outstanding football player, Ginola has always been just as well known for his ventures off the pitch.

Before moving to England the Frenchman had already featured in advertising campaigns for the Morgan clothing company and appearing on the catwalk for Cerruti.

He also appeared in advertising campaigns for Braun shavers, Carte Noire coffee, Kingston Technologies memory sticks, but was most well-known for his work with L'Oreal and Renault.

In 2008 he won a silver medal at the International Wine Challenge for a rosé wine produced at his vineyard in Provence.

Ginola ventured into acting and played the leading role in Anglo-French short film Rosbeef, which premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

His first feature film was The Last Drop, while he's also appeared in shows such as At Home With The Braithwaites and The Young And The Restless.

Ginola is also known for his philanthropy as a campainger for Red Cross Anti-Landmine campaign and UNESCO, as well as being patron and president of the UK based Vision and Sparks charities.

His famous footballing chat-up lines

We might be biased, but Ginola is always excellent value when he appears as a guest on talkSPORT.

On one occasion he talked us through his favourite football-inspired chat-up lines, offering up some classics.

"Is your name Jose? Because you're the special one."

"Can I just say, you're hotter than the 2022 World Cup."

"You should be wearing a football shirt so that I don't have to ask for your name and number."

You can see the full video of Ginola's chat-up lines here.

His love of Only Fools And Horses

In one of his most memorable moments on talkSPORT, Ginola told the story of how he used the hit TV show Only Fools And Horses to learn English after joining Newcastle United in 1995.

He explained: "When you're French and you arrive in the North East and you have a game in London with five hours on the coach.

"On the screen you have Only Fools And Horses which you're watching for the first time in your entire life, it's a bit of a shock in the first place!

"After a while you're getting used to it and you grow to like it.

"'Trig, why do you call me Dave? My name is not Dave my name is Rodney'. 'Don't be a plonker all your life, Rodney!'

He even gave a rather memorable rendition of the Only Fools And Horses theme tune which you can listen to below.

The next king of the jungle?

After featuring on the first season of Danse avec les stars (a French version of the British TV show Strictly Come Dancing), Ginola will return to reality TV after being confirmed as a contestant on I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!

The show will get underway on Sunday, November 21 with the show starting at 9pm.

Ginola will be competing with the likes of Frankie Bridge, Louise Minchin, Richard Madeley, Adam Woodyatt for the title, as well as British diver Matty Lee and Paralympic athlete Kadeena Cox.

According to the latest odds from Sky Bet, Ginola has been given odds of 8/1 to be crowned as king of the jungle, however if he has more moments like he's shared with talkSPORT over the years then those odds could shorten significantly in the coming days and weeks!
