Czech Rep. U17sCzech Republic Under-17svs.Denmark U17sDenmark Under-17s

sportsmole.co.uk, 27 May 2024, 21:41
On Wednesday, Czech Republic Under-17s will face Denmark Under-17s in the quarter-finals of the European Under-17 Championship.

While Czech Republic finished top of Group A with maximum points, Denmark had to settle for second spot in Group B after taking four points from three matches.

Match preview

Czech Republic are set to make their second appearance in the knockout rounds of the European Under-17 Championship after successfully negotiating their way through the group stage with minimum fuss.

They began the campaign with a comprehensive 5-0 win over tournament hosts Cyprus, before they beat Ukraine 3-1 to seal their place in the quarter-finals with a game to spare.

Czech Republic looked set to suffer their first defeat of the competition when Serbia established a 3-2 lead in Sunday's final group matches.

However, Czech Republic staged a dramatic late turnaround, scoring in the 89th and 93rd minute to clinch a 4-3 victory and top spot in Group A.

They will now turn their attention to Wednesday's quarter-final, where they will attempt to claim their first knockout-round victory since beating Spain in the semi-finals of the 2006 tournament.

Denmark kicked off the European Under-17 Championship with a 2-0 win over Wales, before playing out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their second group game against Croatia.

After taking four points from their first two matches, they were given a reality check in Sunday's disappointing 4-0 defeat to Austria.

Fortunately for Denmark, the heavy loss did not prove costly because Croatia's failure to beat Wales ensured that they progressed to the knockout stages for the fourth time in tournament history.

They previously appeared in the knockout rounds in 2002, 2011 and 2022, with all three of those matches ending in defeat.

Having conceded six goals in their last two matches, Denmark have their work cut out to claim their first knockout-round victory against a Czech Republic side that finished the group stage as the tournament's highest scorers.

Team News

Czech Republic boss Jiri Zilak is set to make a number of changes after rotating his squad for Sunday's win over Serbia.

Zilak is expected to recall the likes of Matyas Silhavy, Jiri Micek, Jakub Kolisek, Simon Sloncik and Ondrej Penxa.

Josef Kolarik will be looking to continue his fine form after scoring in two of Czech Republic's three group matches.

As for Denmark, Olti Hyseni is likely to be recalled after coming off the bench to feature as a half-time substitute against Austria.

Arsenal's Chido Obi will continue to lead the line, having started each of Denmark's three games at the tournament.

Czech Republic Under-17s possible starting lineup:

Obdrzalek; Rehacek, Krpalek, Micek, Kolisek; Sloncik, Panos; Kolarik, Belzik, Penxa; Nechvatal

Denmark Under-17s possible starting lineup:

We say: Czech Republic Under-17s 3-1 Denmark Under-17s

Czech Republic showcased their firepower to reach the quarter-finals, and we think that their attacking talent will come to the fore again to make the crucial difference in Wednesday's last-eight matchup.
