Brentford

sportsmole.co.uk, 22 January 2025, 22:37
Brentford midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard has revealed that it was an "easy decision" to commit his long-term future to the club.

The Denmark international joined the Bees from Italian side Sampdoria in a deal worth around €14m (£11.8m) in the summer of 2022.

Damsgaard signed a five-year deal upon his arrival in the English capital, with that contract set to run until June 2027.

However, Brentford have now confirmed that has put pen to paper on a new long-term contract until the summer of 2030, with the option to extend by a further year.

Damsgaard comments on new long-term deal

Damsgaard, who has made a total of 81 appearances for the Bees, admitted it was a simple decision to extend his stay with Thomas Frank's side.

"It's nice to get it done," Damsgaard told Brentford's media channels. "I've enjoyed my years here so it was a no-brainer for me to extend - I'm very happy.

"This season has been a lot better for me personally with a lot more playing time, but I've always enjoyed the atmosphere at the club, time with my teammmates and the way things have been set up.

"I'm very proud and happy to be here. I'm very happy to see how the fans support me. It makes you give that extra five per cent and I'm very thankful for the fans we have. With the playing time now coming, it was a pretty easy decision to extend."

Damsgaard has been a regular fixture in the Brentford side this season, having started 19 of his 22 Premier League appearances, contributing two goals and seven assists.

Frank "happy" to secure new Damsgaard deal

Frank expressed his delight at Damsgaard's new contract, insisting that the best is yet to come from the Danish midfielder.

"I am very happy that Mikkel has signed a new contract with us," Frank said. "This season, he is starting to show what we believed we'd get from him. We knew that wouldn't happen straight away because of the time he was out before he came here, but it ended up being longer than expected - both for him and us.

"Mikkel was then unlucky with another injury but, after two years of relatively consistent training and a good environment - and with patience both ways - we are now seeing the fruit of the work. He has been one of our best players this season; we are very dangerous when he is playing.

"But there is more to come from Mikkel. It has been half a season, now he needs to perform for a full season. We need to add layers, but I am happy with what he is doing."

Damsgaard is likely to feature in the starting lineup when Brentford take on Crystal Palace in Sunday's Premier League clash at Selhurst Park.
