Betis2 - 2Barcelona

sportsmole.co.uk, 13 January 2025, 22:24
A place in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals will be at stake when Barcelona face fellow La Liga side Real Betis in Wednesday's Copa del Rey clash.

Barcelona return home after enjoying a successful trip to Saudi Arabia, where they saw off Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid to win the Spanish Super Cup for the 15th time.

To make the triumph even sweeter, the Blaugrana clinched the silverware with a thumping 5-2 victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid in Sunday's final, making it the perfect follow-up to the 4-0 victory they record in October's La Liga Clasico.

While Barcelona enjoyed a successful weekend, Betis would have been disappointed with their efforts in Saturday's 1-0 league defeat to relegation-threatened Real Valladolid, ensuring Manuel Pellegrini will be demanding a positive response in their upcoming trip to Catalonia.

Ahead of what should be an entertaining affair at the Gtech Community Stadium, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between Barcelona and Betis.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 140

Real Betis wins: 30

Draws: 25

Barcelona wins: 85

Barcelona and Real Betis have locked horns on 140 occasions in all competitions, and Barcelona lead the head-to-head with 85 wins to Real Betis' 30, while there have also been 25 draws throughout history, including their last meeting, which finished 2-2 in December 2024.

Unsurprisingly, Barcelona have the most goals in this fixture, finding the back of the net on 328 occasions to Real Betis' 161, while Lionel Messi is comfortably the all-time leading goalscorer in this contest, scoring 26 times against Real Betis during his time with Barcelona, while Sandor Kocsis is second in the list with 12.

Barcelona had been on a six-game winning run against Real Betis in all competitions, including 5-0 and 4-2 successes in their two league matches during the 2023-24 campaign, before the 2-2 last time out.

The Catalan team also thumped Real Betis 4-0 in the league in April 2023, and they are unbeaten against the Green and Whites since a surprise 1-0 reverse at Camp Nou in December 2021.

Interestingly, Barcelona's last two defeats to Real Betis have come on home soil, and they are unbeaten away to the Seville outfit since January 2011, when they lost 3-1 in the second leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final which they still managed to win thanks to a 5-0 success in the home leg.

Not since March 2008 have Barcelona lost to Real Betis at Estadio Benito Villamarin.

In La Liga, Barcelona lead the head-to-head record 73 wins to Real Betis' 22, while there have also been 22 draws; the Catalan team have also won 10 of the last 12 meetings in Spain's top flight, while they have scored at least twice in 23 of their last 26 matches against Real Betis in all competitions.

Meanwhile, in the Copa del Rey, Barcelona have won their last two ties against Los Verdiblancos, including a 3-2 extra-time win in the 1996-97 final.

Betis last got the better of Barcelona in a Copa del Rey tie in 1994 when they recorded a 1-0 aggregate win to reach the semi-finals.
