Arsenal can deal double blow on Girona by beating them in the Champions League

The Gunners have travelled to Spain for the final match of the revamped competition's new league phase.

Arsenal are currently third in the standings and, barring large goal swings across other fixtures, are set to qualify for the last 16.

Mikel Arteta's side are also on course for healthy financial rewards as part of their Champions League success so far this season.

Each club pockets around £1.8million for every league phase win, with Arsenal already on five.

A win over Girona would therefore see them earn in the region of £10.8million, whilst their one draw rewards an extra £586,000 or so.

Each position in the table is worth around £230,000, so Arsenal will receive close to £7.8m if they finish third after all eight games.

Progression to the last 16 also offers a guaranteed £9.2million and a top eight finish equals a near £168,000 bonus, so the Gunners could be in line for around £28.6million in total.

Girona aren't set to fare as well though, with the LaLiga side already confirmed to be eliminated from the competition.

They are 31st with just one win, so failure to avoid defeat against Arsenal will see just £1.8million come their way for the sole victory.

Should they finish in their current standing, they will earn close to £1.4million to take their overall earnings to around £3.2million.

All 36 clubs receive in the region of £15.6million just for participating in the league phase, but Arsenal are set to be even bigger earners.

This could see them deal another blow to Girona but this time off the pitch as both sides eye the same transfer target.

talkSPORT understands Arsenal are hopeful of beating interest from fellow Premier League clubs for Rosenborg starlet Sverre Nypan.

Nypan has been tipped as the 'next Martin Odegaard', with reports also linking Manchester City with the 18-year-old midfielder.

However, talkSPORT understands that City will not be making a move for Nypan before the transfer window closes on February 3.

Arsenal could therefore be in pole position to sign him but they must first keep their attention on beating Girona tonight.
