Alan Brazil reveals we've been saying his name wrong for 30 years

Brazil was joined by Dean Saunders for the talkSPORT Breakfast show, where Saunders shared with the listeners: "I've just found out, everybody in the country needs to listen to this.

"Alan Brazil is not really Alan Brazil. His name is officially Alan Brea-zil."

"Who told you that?" Brazil asked, smirking.

"You did!" Saunders replied.

"You little fibber, I did not," Brazil responded.

"There is somewhere someone said that to me, part of the family, and I'm like what, there's no conclusive evidence of that," Brazil added.

"What about the horse at Cheltenham we all backed? Brazil?" Saunders questioned.

"You weren't winging there, were you?" Brazil said.

"Brea-zil," Saunders repeated. "It doesn't sound right."

"It's not right!" Brazil replied.

"All I'm asking is, have you got any Welsh in you? Because it's St. David's Day on Saturday," Saunders said.

Despite Saunders' best efforts, for now, we know Brazil to be proudly hailing from Govan, Glasgow.

Brazil began at Ipswich Town in 1977, where he flourished, playing a crucial role in their 1981 UEFA Cup victory, with his goal-scoring ability winning the hearts of the fans.

In 1983, he made a move to Tottenham Hotspur, where he participated in their UEFA Cup campaign, although he missed out on the final.

A move to Manchester United followed, but his time there was severely limited by a persistent back injury, which ultimately hampered his career.

Internationally, Brazil represented Scotland, earning 13 caps and featuring in the 1982 World Cup. His international career was also affected by his ongoing back issues.

Following his time at Manchester United, he played for Coventry City and Queens Park Rangers. He was forced to retire prematurely due to his back problems.

Brazil isn't the only talkSPORT regular who has recently shared that their name has been mispronounced for years.

In January, Arsenal Invincibles player Martin Keown disclosed that both fans and pundits alike haven't pronounced his name in the way his Gaelic family intended.

Speaking to Hayters, Keown said: "Yeah, Ke-owen is the pronunciation.

"My father worked hard, and I kind of gave up on it because it was so difficult to get people to say the word.

"The Irish just say it, and it rolls off the tongue for their dialect, but for English people to say it…

"Jon Motson, in his wisdom, God rest his soul, spoke to me before one of the first games he did with me, and such was his preparation, he asked, 'How are we saying this?'

"He'd heard Keown and Ke-owen, and we decided that Keown was perhaps the most sensible way to go so that's what we did."

Keown was born in Oxford to a Northern Irish father and Irish mother, meaning he held the choice to represent either England, Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland on the international stage.

Ultimately, the defender chose to stand with the Three Lions and went on to achieve an impressive 43 caps for his country.
