Wolvesvs.Arsenal

sportsmole.co.uk, 19 April 2024, 11:41
Wolverhampton Wanderers will be bidding to prevent Arsenal from setting two new club records in their Premier League fixture on Saturday night.

The Gunners are making the trip to Molineux on the back of defeats to Aston Villa and Bayern Munich in the top flight and Champions League respectively.

Although Mikel Arteta's side have failed to score in either contest, they will move back to the top of the Premier League table should they record three points at Molineux.

Should they achieve that goal in the West Midlands, Arsenal will have extended their winning streak over Wolves to six matches, each of those games coming in the league.

In the two fixtures that have taken place at Molineux during that time, Wolves have failed to score in each contest, losing 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.

What club records can Arsenal set?

While Wolves will be focused on ending their own four-match winless streak in the Premier League, Gary O'Neil's side will be looking to prevent Arsenal from setting two new entries in the history books.

Arsenal have incredibly scored in their last 32 matches against Wolves in all competitions, a streak that has lasted since Wolves won 1-0 at Highbury in 1979.

Should the North Londoners get on the scoresheet on Saturday night, it would set a new high for that particular feat in their history.

At the other end of the pitch, Arsenal have come through their last five away fixtures in the Premier League without conceding a single goal.

They last achieved such a run of shutouts between February and April 27 years ago, and reaching six matches would represent a new club record.

Nearly a decade has passed since any team in the Premier League has put together a run of six successive away clean sheets, that being Liverpool in 2014-15.

Form book not in Wolves' favour

Although Wolves can be relatively satisfied with a points return of 24 from 15 league matches at Molineux during 2023-24, they have lost three of their last five such fixtures, four in six if you include the FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Coventry City.

Across a seven-match period at Molineux, Wolves have also conceded four goals - in three separate games - in the 96th minute or later.

As many as seven goals have also been shipped in the 70th minute and beyond over the same period, even though Wolves have kept two clean sheets during that time.

Wolves head into the next matchday with the opportunity to move to within four points of seventh-placed Manchester United, but at risk of falling as low as 13th if results go against them on Sunday.
