Tamworthvs.Spurs

sportsmole.co.uk, 9 January 2025, 08:55
Fresh from one dose of knockout success, Tottenham Hotspur endeavour to avoid being on the wrong end of an FA Cup giant killing in Sunday's third-round clash with fifth-tier Tamworth.

Ange Postecoglou's men hit the road on the back of a 1-0 success over Liverpool in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals, triumphing on Wednesday night thanks to a controversial Lucas Bergvall winner.

Approaching the 17-year mark without a major piece of silverware, Spurs last won the FA Cup in 1991 and have not even made it past the fifth round since the 2017-18 season, losing to beaten finalists Manchester City in round four last year.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up Tottenham's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the showdown with Tamworth, who are one of just two National League sides still left in the competition alongside Dagenham & Redbridge.

Rodrigo Bentancur

Status: Out

Type of injury: Head

Possible return date: Unknown

Play was stopped for 10 minutes on Wednesday evening after Rodrigo Bentancur suffered a worrying head injury; Spurs confirmed at half time that the Uruguayan was conscious and communicating on his way to the hospital, but he will surely now be out for a while.

Destiny Udogie

Status: Out

Type of injury: Hamstring

Possible return date: February 16 (vs. Man United)

Destiny Udogie suffered a second thigh injury within the space of a few weeks in the 2-2 stalemate with Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 29, and this one is far more severe than the issue he picked up against Southampton - a return is not anticipated until the middle of February.

Guglielmo Vicario

Status: Out

Type of injury: Ankle

Possible return date: March 8 (vs. Bournemouth)

Guglielmo Vicario still has about two months to go in his rehabilitation from an ankle fracture, but Spurs ought to be in safe hands with Antonin Kinsky, who impressed on his debut for the club against Liverpool.

Cristian Romero

Status: Out

Type of injury: Thigh

Possible return date: January 26 (vs. Leicester City)

Cristian Romero has been sidelined since hurting his thigh against Chelsea in the middle of December, but Postecoglou is hopeful that the Argentina international will be fit to return before the end of January.

Micky van de Ven

Status: Out

Type of injury: Hamstring

Possible return date: January 26 (vs. Leicester)

Likewise, Romero's main centre-back partner Micky van de Ven is targeting a comeback against Leicester City at the end of the month, having also sustained a hamstring injury in the defeat to the Blues.

Richarlison

Status: Out

Type of injury: Hamstring

Possible return date: January 19 (vs. Everton)

Long-term absentee Richarlison is now back on the training pitches after a hamstring injury, but Postecoglou wants the Brazilian to have two full weeks of practice under his belt before he throws him back into the team, so a return on Sunday is out of the question.

Wilson Odobert

Status: Out

Type of injury: Hamstring

Possible return date: Unknown

Wilson Odobert's first season at Spurs has been severely hampered by injury, and the Frenchman is currently on the mend from the hamstring operation he underwent in November, with no timeframe being placed on his return.

Ben Davies

Status: Out

Type of injury: Hamstring

Possible return date: January 26 (vs. Leicester)

Postecoglou was initially hopeful of having Ben Davies back in action by now, but the Welshman then suffered a setback in his recuperation from a hamstring problem and will be missing for another couple of weeks.

TOTTENHAM'S SUSPENSION LIST

Tottenham have no players suspended for this match, as James Maddison and Pape Sarr are back from the bans they served in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final.
