The Cherries sit seventh in the table and just three points behind the top four, despite losing 2-0 at home to Premier League leaders Liverpool a fortnight ago.

Andoni Iraola's side returned to winning ways in the FA Cup fourth round last weekend, beating Everton 2-0, but Southampton lost 1-0 to Championship outfit Burnley, a week on from securing a 2-1 top-flight victory at Ipswich Town.

Southampton and Bournemouth have faced each other a total of 35 times across all competitions and it is the Saints who lead the overall head-to-head record, as they have won 16 games compared to the Cherries' 10, while nine draws have been played out between the two clubs.

Their very first meeting took place back in November 1953 when Bournemouth - known then as Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic - played out a 1-1 draw with Southampton in the first round of the FA Cup, before winning the replay 3-1 on home soil four days later.

Both teams then faced each other 10 times in Division Three (South) over the next five years, with Southampton winning five and drawing two, including a memorable 7-0 home victory in October 1957 - their biggest-ever win over the Cherries to date.

From 1960 to 2011, Southampton and Bournemouth only butted heads on five occasions in all competitions. The Cherries won an EFL Cup second-round tie 3-2 on aggregate, before the Saints celebrated a 2-0 first-round win and also two League One victories (2-0 at home and 3-1 away) during the 2010-11 season.

In the Premier League, Southampton and Bournemouth have faced each other 13 times since their very first top-flight battle in 2015, with the Saints winning five times to the Cherries' four.

Bournemouth have won the last two Premier League meetings, though, following up a narrow 1-0 away victory in April 2023 with a 3-1 home win in September 2024.
