Newcastle1 - 2Brighton

sportsmole.co.uk, 2 March 2025, 16:35
Danny Welbeck delivered a moment of magic off the bench on Sunday, netting the decisive goal in extra time to secure Brighton & Hove Albion's dramatic 2-1 triumph over Newcastle United in the FA Cup fifth round.

Although Brighton controlled possession with 61% in the first half, Newcastle appeared more assured, taking the lead through Alexander Isak's powerful penalty and almost adding a second if not for an offside call, but the Seagulls hit back just before half time when Yankuba Minteh struck against his former side, redeeming himself for giving away the earlier penalty.

The second half was largely uneventful until the final 10 minutes, which saw Anthony Gordon and Tariq Lamptey both receive their marching orders, and Fabian Schar thought he had scored the winner in the 93rd minute only for VAR to rule the goal out for the tightest of offside decisions, meaning the tie went to extra-time.

The following 30 minutes saw very few chances as both teams ran out of energy, but there would be one final twist in the tale, as Welbeck wonderfully chipped into the Newcastle net with just six minutes remaining, and Brighton stood strong to defend their lead and move into the next round of the cup.

SPORTS MOLE'S VERDICT

Brighton and Newcastle both put every last bit of energy and effort into that sensational fifth round draw, with the Seagulls edging the Magpies after a clinical finish from Welbeck - something that both teams had lacked in the prior 113 minutes.

Both managers will be pleased with their team's performances, though Eddie Howe will rue Newcastle's lack of clinical finishing in front of goal, while Fabian Hurzeler will be delighted with his side for battling back from 1-0 down to win it late on.

Brighton were arguably the side with more control for much of the 120 minutes, as after a brief period of Newcastle dominance following the opener, they looked more composed as they continued to play their style of football, something that helped them to eventually secure the win.

NEWCASTLE VS. BRIGHTON HIGHLIGHTS

Alexander Isak goal vs. Brighton (22nd min, Newcastle 1-0 Brighton)

Isak fires Newcastle into the lead, emphatic from the spot!

Minteh clumsily challenges Tino Livramento inside the box, and after a brief moment of consideration, the referee points to the spot to give Newcastle a penalty.

Isak, who chipped his last penalty, played no games this time, smashing his strike into the top left corner to and Newcastle the advantage.

Yankuba Minteh goal vs. Newcastle (44th min, Newcastle 1-1 Brighton)

Brighton are level, Minteh has redeemed himself!

A long throw from Tariq Lamptey is knocked down to Pedro by Minteh, and the two Brighton forwards brilliantly combine to send Minteh racing through on Newcastle's goal.

Minteh gets inside the box and looks to curl his effort round the goalkeeper, but a deflection from Kieron Trippier sends it into the opposite corner as Minteh equalises against his former side.

83rd min: Anthony Gordon (Newcastle) red card

Gordon receives red!

The play has already been stopped due to an offside, but Gordon and Jan Paul van Hecke continue battling for the loose ball, culminating in Gordon pushing the defender.

Gordon's push contacts with Van Hecke's red, and the referee swiftly gives the winger a red card, leaving Newcastle down to 10.

91st min: Tariq Lamptey (Brighton) red card

Another red card, this time for Lamptey!

The defender lets the ball run past his body but the ball gets away from him, and Lamptey dives into the challenge but catches the Newcastle man in the process.

Anthony Taylor quickly hands the defender his second yellow, giving Lamptey his marching orders.

Danny Welbeck goal vs. Newcastle (114th min, Newcastle 1-2 Brighton)

Brighton have taken the lead, Welbeck has chipped it in!

The visitors sweep forward on the counter attack, switching the ball from left to right to Solly March, who has plenty of space to move towards the box.

March picks out Welbeck behind the Newcastle defence and inside the area, and the striker chips over the onrushing Martin Dubravka to hand Brighton a late lead.

MAN OF THE MATCH - DANNY WELBECK

Both teams had plenty of players that could have been awarded the man of the match, as both sets of players left everything on the pitch in an attempt to secure the victory.

However, the award simply has to go the man who scored the wonderful late winner, as Welbeck came off the bench to score the winning goal against Newcastle - his second decisive goal at St James' Park this season.

Pedro was also a standout for Brighton, creating the first with a sublime through ball to Minteh, while he continued battling despite clearly being out of fuel in the final 25 minutes.
