Millwallvs.Norwich

sportsmole.co.uk, 19 April 2025, 18:53
Millwall will attempt to keep their faint playoff hopes alive when they welcome Norwich City to the Den for Monday's contest.

The Lions are sitting six points adrift of the playoffs in ninth place, while the Canaries will head into the match in 13th spot in the Championship table.

Match preview

Millwall carried significant momentum into Friday's away clash against Blackburn Rovers after recording three consecutive wins against Portsmouth, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough.

However, the feel-good factor was ultimately quashed by a heavy 4-1 defeat at Ewood Park, representing a third defeat in their last four away league games.

The Lions are now six points adrift of sixth-placed Coventry City with three matches left to play against Norwich City, Swansea City and Burnley.

Alex Neil's side will be pleased to have home advantage for Monday's contest, having won each of their previous three matches at the Den.

Millwall have won just one of their last 10 home league meetings with the Canaries (D2, L7), although that victory took place in last season's home clash between the two sides.

The Lions hopes of claiming all three points could rest on whether they strike first, given the fact they have won 10 of their 12 home league games where they have opened the scoring this season (D2), compared to seven defeats in the nine Championship home matches where they have conceded first (D2).

Norwich have little to play for in their final three matches, having fallen considerably short in their bid to replicate last season's top-six finish, with the Canaries sitting in 13th place after collecting 53 points from 43 matches.

They will head into Monday's fixture in a downbeat mood after taking just one point from four matches since beating West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at the end of March.

The Canaries lost away games against Plymouth Argyle and Burnley, either side of a goalless home draw with Sunderland, before they suffered a disappointing 5-3 defeat in Friday's meeting with Portsmouth at Carrow Road.

They went 4-1 down after 51 minutes of Friday's contest, before Jack Stacey and Emiliano Marcondes scored on either side of Pompey's fifth to restore a degree of respectability to the scoreline.

However, Johannes Hoff Thorup would have still been frustrated by the fact that his team shipped five goals on home turf, especially as they now have the joint fifth-worst defensive record in the league.

The Canaries have also gone five away matches without a win, including 2-1 defeats in each of their previous three road trips.

Millwall are unable to call upon the services of Calum Scanlon, Danny McNamara, Zak Lovelace, Duncan Watmore and Camiel Neghli.

There are also doubts surrounding the availability of defender Zak Sturge and attacker Ra'ees Bangura-Williams.

The goalkeepering duo of Lukas Jensen and Liam Roberts are unlikely to be available, while Joe Bryan is a doubt after he missed the defeat to Blackburn.

As for the visitors, they are expected to be without Ben Chrisene, Lewis Dobbin, Gabriel Forsyth and Lucien Mahovo.

Matej Jurasek is hoping to prove his fitness in time for the fixture, while it is unclear whether Ante Crnac and Angus Gunn will be available for selection.

Forward Josh Sargent will have to be assessed after he was forced off at half time against Portsmouth with a shoulder problem.

Millwall possible starting lineup:

Evans; Harding, Crama, Cooper, Leonard; Honeyman, De Norre, Mitchell, Azeez; Ivanonic, Coburn

Norwich City possible starting lineup:

Long; Stacey, Duffy, Cordoba, Fisher; Slimane, Wright, McLean; Schwartau, Sainz, Marcondes
