Mallorcavs.Leganes

sportsmole.co.uk, 17 April 2025, 13:18
European-chasing Mallorca will be aiming to make it successive wins in Spain's top flight when they continue their campaign with a home fixture against relegation-threatened Leganes on Saturday evening.

Mallorca are currently eighth in the La Liga table, boasting 43 points from their 31 league matches this season, while Leganes are 19th, having picked up just 28 points from their 31 games during the 2024-25 campaign.

Match preview

Mallorca have a record of 12 wins, seven draws and 12 defeats from their 31 league matches this season, with a record of 43 points leaving them in eighth spot in the table, five points behind sixth-placed Real Betis.

Jagoba Arrasate's side are in the mix for a European spot heading towards the final straight, and they will be aiming to make it successive wins in the league, having beaten Real Sociedad 2-0 last time out.

The Pirates were 15th in Spain's top flight last term, but there has been a big improvement during the 2024-25 campaign, with the team fairly solid defensively, which is fortunate considering that only 31 league goals have been registered by the team.

Mallorca have picked up 23 points from their 16 home league games during the 2024-25 campaign, and they will be welcoming a Leganes outfit that have only 10 points to show from their 15 away fixtures this term.

The Pirates will be bidding to do a league double over Leganes, having recorded a 1-0 victory in the reverse meeting between the two sides earlier this season, with that match taking place in August 2024.

Leganes, meanwhile, will enter the match off the back of a 1-0 home defeat to Barcelona, which proved to be their fourth defeat in their last five matches during a poor run of form.

Borja Jimenez's side were last victorious at the start of March, beating Getafe 1-0 on home soil, while their only away league success of the campaign was a huge one, triumphing 1-0 over Barcelona back in December 2024.

Leganes have a record of six wins, 10 draws and 15 defeats from their 31 league matches this season, with a total of 28 points leaving them in 19th spot in the table, two points behind 17th-placed Alaves.

It is not quite time to hit the panic button, with a lot of points still to play for, but their lack of goals this term is a concern, only finding the back of the net on 29 occasions, which is the second-worst attacking record behind basement side Real Valladolid (21).

Leganes are the reigning Segunda Division champions, with the team back at this level for the first time since 2020, so it would be a huge achievement for them to make it successive campaigns in the top flight.

Team News

Mallorca will again be without the services of Manu Morlanes through injury, while Robert Navarro, Vedat Muriqi and Takuma Asano are also expected to be unavailable for selection this weekend.

Head coach Arrasate could name the same side that took to the field for the first whistle against Real Sociedad, with Dani Rodriguez potentially featuring alongside Cyle Larin in the final third of the field.

Sergi Darder was on the scoresheet against Real Sociedad and should continue in a midfield three, with Omar Mascarell and Abdon Prats likely to be among the players in reserve for the home side on Saturday.

As for Leganes, Enric Franquesa is a long-term absentee with a serious knee injury, while a thigh problem is also expected to rule central defender Matija Nastasic out of contention.

Dani Raba picked up a milestone yellow card in the team's defeat to Barcelona last time out, so the forward will miss out through suspension, which is expected to open the door for Munir El Haddadi to start.

There should also be a return to the XI for Juan Cruz, while Yvan Neyou is also likely to be recalled in central midfield.

Mallorca possible starting lineup:

Greif; Maffeo, Valjent, Raillo, Copete, Mojica; A Sanchez, Costa, Darder; Larin, D Rodriguez

Leganes possible starting lineup:

Dmitrovic; Rosier, Saenz, Gonzalez, J Hernandez; Alti, Rodriguez, Tapia, Neyou, Cruz; Munir

We say: Mallorca 1-0 Leganes

Two of the last three La Liga meetings between these two sides have finished 1-0, including earlier this season, and we are predicting the same scoreline here. Both teams have struggled to score goals this term, but Mallorca have been relatively strong defensively, and we are backing Arrasate's side to secure all three points in this contest.
