Liverpoolvs.Man Utd

sportsmole.co.uk, 4 January 2025, 07:56
Manchester United are in danger of suffering their worst run for 116 years when they head to Anfield on Sunday afternoon to tackle long-standing rivals Liverpool in the Premier League.

The Red Devils have been beaten in each of their last three league matches, losing to Bournemouth, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United, conceding seven times and failing to find the back of the net.

Man United are aiming to avoid losing four league games in succession in the same season for the first time since 1979, while they last suffered four losses in a row without scoring back in 1909.

Ruben Amorim's side have not won or scored in the Premier League since the Manchester derby in the middle of December, when Amad Diallo came up with a last-gasp effort to secure all three points for the Red Devils.

Last month, Man United lost six matches in a month for just the third time in their history, while their 18 goals conceded was their most in a single month since March 1964 - another indication of their struggles.

Man United will enter Liverpool clash off the back of three straight league defeats

Man United have incredibly only managed one goal in their last eight top-flight matches against Liverpool at Anfield, while they have won just one of their last 13 Premier League games against Sunday's opponents.

The Red Devils are currently down in 14th spot in the Premier League table, picking up only 22 points from 19 matches, which has left them seven points clear of the relegation zone and 13 points off the top four.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are flying high at the top of the division, sitting six points clear of second-placed Arsenal with a game in hand, and they will be looking to record a 15th league success of the campaign this weekend.

"In football, [in] one game, anything can happen. If you talk about the season, then, almost every time, the best win. In the moment, they are better than us but we can win any game," Amorim told reporters during Friday's press conference.

"We have to focus not on the context but on the performance. What we have to do is simple things and I think we have to improve the simple things to play these kind of games. We have the responsibility to play to win the game."

What is Man United's team news for the clash with Liverpool?

Man United will once again be missing Mason Mount, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw through injury on Sunday, while Marcus Rashford is set to be absent for the Red Devils once again.

Amorim said during his press conference on Friday that "it's the same situation", with the Englishman recently being overlooked due to some underwhelming performances in training and his general behaviour around Carrington.

However, Rashford has also been absent from training due to an illness, making it even more unlikely that the 27-year-old, who continues to be linked with a January exit, will make the trip to Anfield.
