Leicestervs.Man City

sportsmole.co.uk, 27 December 2024, 13:48
Both in desperate need of some end-of-year inspiration, Premier League foes Leicester City and Manchester City play their final match of 2024 at the King Power Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Pep Guardiola's crisis-hit champions now have just one win from 13 after drawing 1-1 with Everton on Boxing Day, a result that left them 14 points below Liverpool in the Premier League standings.

Meanwhile, the Foxes are reeling from a third defeat on the bounce away to Liverpool, whose 3-1 comeback success on December 26 plunged Ruud van Nistelrooy's team into the relegation zone.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 127

Leicester wins: 32

Draws: 29

Man City wins: 66

A fixture first fought in the days of Division Two in 1895 - when Leicester were suffixed with Fosse - the Foxes have now collided with Manchester City on 127 occasions but have come out on the wrong end of the scoreline more often than not.

Indeed, the Citizens have come up trumps 66 times in this fixture, including each of their last four in a row, doing the double over Leicester City in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 Premier League campaigns before the Foxes dropped down to the Championship.

One of those victories came in a nine-goal Etihad extravaganza in December 2021, where Raheem Sterling bagged a brace in an astonishing 6-3 win for Guardiola's side, who very nearly blew a 4-0 advantage.

A few months beforehand, Leicester marched to their 32nd and most recent victory over the reigning Premier League champions, sinking the Citizens 1-0 in the Community Shield thanks to a Kelechi Iheanacho penalty to follow up their FA Cup success over Chelsea.

Leicester have to travel back to the behind-closed-doors days of 2020 for their most recent Premier League win over Man City, but it was a particularly momentous one, as they obliterated Guardiola's team 5-2 at their Etihad base.

Up until Man City's 4-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in November 2024, that seven-goal spectacular was the Citizens' joint-heaviest Premier League home loss of the Guardiola era, but the champions have won each of their last four away games against Leicester without conceding.

Only 29 draws have ever been contested between Man City and Leicester, and none since a goalless stalemate in December 2015; there has been a winner and a loser in their last 18 meetings across all competitions.

Always one to thrive against members of the 'Big Six', evergreen Leicester striker Jamie Vardy leads the individual goalscoring column in this fixture with nine efforts, one more than ex-Foxes striker Jimmy Walsh.
