Separated by four points in the top six of the League One table, Huddersfield Town and Wrexham will do battle at the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday.

The visitors moved within two points of the automatic promotion spots at the weekend, while their hosts sit fifth after a return to winning ways.

Match preview

Huddersfield Town return to the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday in search of back-to-back League One victories to strengthen their standing in the top six.

After putting themselves in contention for an immediate automatic promotion back to the Championship, sitting on 48 points from their first 25 outings, the Terriers all but dropped out of contention for a top-two spot as their next four matches produced a draw and three straight defeats.

Michael Duff's side did then bounce back with consecutive away victories over Barnsley and Shrewsbury Town, only to see their top-six standing put at risk entirely in another pair of defeats, falling at home to Peterborough United and away at Wigan Athletic last Tuesday.

A trip to the Lamex Stadium to take on Stevenage then followed at the weekend, and the Yorkshire outfit were able to make a crucial return to winning ways, going ahead early through Callum Marshall before Nigel Lonwijk restored their lead in the 24th minute of a 2-1 triumph.

Staying fifth thanks to that victory, and having extended their lead over seventh spot in League One to four points, Huddersfield Town will bid to make it consecutive triumphs on Tuesday to move within touching distance of the visitors.

That will be no easy task, though, as their opponents head to Yorkshire aiming to break into the top two with a return to winning ways of their own on Tuesday.

After winning back-to-back promotions from the National League over the last two seasons, Wrexham have again enjoyed a particularly impressive campaign thus far, currently sitting third in England's third tier having amassed 62 points from their 33 outings.

While that is not largely down to their away form, with eight teams having collected more than the Red Dragons' 22 points on the road, Phil Parkinson's men have won each of their last three away trips in League One, firstly seeing off Crawley Town and Northampton Town alongside EFL Trophy wins over Port Vale and Bolton Wanderers.

The Welsh outfit would then bounce back from a home defeat to Leyton Orient by beating Mansfield Town 2-1 on the road, and as their busy schedule continued, Parkinson's men hosted Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy semi-final on Wednesday and dropped out following a penalty shootout before most recently sharing the points with playoff-chasing Bolton Wanderers at the weekend.

Having remained third after that draw and narrowed their gap to second-placed Wycombe Wanderers to just two points with 13 games remaining, Wrexham will now aim to crack the top two with a fourth straight away league victory and a fifth on the road in all competitions.

Team News

Huddersfield Town continue to deal with an unenviable injury list, as defenders Tom Lees, Matty Pearson, Mickel Miller and Radinio Balker are set to remain confined to the treatment room alongside midfielder Herbie Kane and forwards Danny Ward and Rhys Healey.

They did welcome striker Joe Taylor back to action off the bench at the weekend after his own layoff, and he and Dion Charles will push for starts up front but may again have to settle for appearances off the bench behind Josh Koroma and Callum Marshall, who have netted nine and eight goals respectively this term.

In the absence of senior centre-backs, Josh Ruffels could again join Nigel Lonwijk and Brodie Spencer in a back three, while Ben Wiles will hope to return to the midfield from the outset after Antony Evans and Joe Hodge partnered up behind Tawanda Chirewa against Stevenage.

Wrexham will remain without midfielder Andy Cannon, who is set to miss the rest of the campaign through injury.

In his absence, George Dobson, Matty James and Oliver Rathbone will hope to continue in the engine room but face competition from Elliot Lee, who has made consecutive substitute appearances after missing three matches following a car accident.

Elsewhere, captain James McClean will hope to come in from the start in a left wing-back role, with Sebastian Revan preferred in recent weeks, while January arrivals Jay Rodriguez and Sam Smith should continue their strike partnership despite competition from Steven Fletcher, Jack Marriott and Paul Mullin.

Huddersfield Town possible starting lineup:

Nicholls; Spencer, Lonwijk, Ruffels; Sorensen, Hodge, Wiles, Roosken; Chirewa; Marshall, Koroma

Wrexham possible starting lineup:

Okonkwo; Cleworth, O'Connell, O'Connor; Longman, Dobson, James, Rathbone, McClean; Smith, Rodriguez

We say: Huddersfield Town 2-2 Wrexham
