Crystal Palacevs.Spurs

sportsmole.co.uk, 24 January 2025, 14:58
Tottenham Hotspur Women will look to extend their three-game unbeaten league run when they travel to the VBS Community Stadium for Sunday's clash with Crystal Palace Women.

Spurs will head into the weekend in sixth position, while the Eagles are propping up the Women's Super League table.

Match preview

Palace are in a real battle to avoid an immediate return to the Championship, having won one, drawn two and lost eight of their 11 league matches this season.

The Eagles have lost each of their last four league matches since drawing with Everton in November, including a heavy 5-0 loss in last Sunday's away clash with Arsenal.

As a result of that defeat, Palace have now shipped 31 goals in 11 league matches - seven more than any other side in the top flight.

They also have to improve at the opposite end of the pitch, especially in front of their own supporters after scoring just one goal in their five home league matches.

Laura Kaminski's side will be seeking revenge against Tottenham, having already lost two head-to-head matches this season, falling to a heavy 4-0 defeat in September's away league clash, before losing 2-0 at home in December's Women's League Cup meeting.

After taking four points from their final two league games of 2024, Spurs made it three WSL games without defeat with a narrow 1-0 victory over Leicester City.

Sophie Howard's fourth-minute own goal proved enough to separate the two sides, as Tottenham stood firm at the opposite end of the pitch to record their first WSL clean sheet since the opening weekend of the season.

Unfortunately for Spurs, they were unable to enjoy similar success in Wednesday's Women's League Cup quarter-final against West Ham United despite taking an early lead through Martha Thomas.

The Scotland international saw her opener cancelled out by Seraina Piubel, before Kirsty Smith scored what proved to be the game's final goal in the 44th minute, ending Tottenham's dreams of winning the Women's League Cup for the very first time.

Spurs will have to quickly pick themselves for Sunday's league fixture, with the visitors looking to claim their first away league victory since beating Bristol City in March last year.

Team News

Indiah-Paige Riley has missed Palace's first two competitive matches of the calendar year, making her a doubt for Sunday's meeting with Spurs.

Ria Oling and Clarissa Larisey could be involved in the squad following their recent arrivals from Rosengard and Hacken respectively.

Ashleigh Weerden is pushing for a starting berth after coming off the bench to play over half an hour in the defeat to Arsenal.

As for the visitors, they are unable to call upon the services of Ella Morris, Kit Graham and Eveliina Summanen due to injury.

Lize Kop was cup-tied for the midweek clash with West Ham, but she is expected to return between the posts to make her second appearance since arriving from Leicester City earlier this month.

Kop's fellow winter signing Olivia Holdt will try to prove her fitness in time to feature in Tottenham's matchday squad.

Crystal Palace Women possible starting lineup:

Yanez; Green, Nolan, Everett, Veje, Woodham; Cato, Potter, Blanchard, Weerden; Stengel

Tottenham Hotspur Women possible starting lineup:

Kop; Neville, Buhler, Bartrip, Nilden; Raso, Ahtinen, Oroz, Naz; Spence, England

We say: Crystal Palace Women 1-3 Tottenham Hotspur Women

Palace have conceded three or more goals in three of their last four league games, and we think that Tottenham will capitalise on that defensive weakness to claim a relatively comfortable victory in Sunday's WSL fixture.
