The Red Devils head south without the services of Anthony Martial (groin), Tyrell Malacia (knee), Luke Shaw (thigh), Victor Lindelof (thigh), Lisandro Martinez (calf) and Raphael Varane (muscle), while Jonny Evans (muscle), Antony (muscle) and Scott McTominay (knee) are all doubts.
Should Evans manage to shake off his concern, the experienced Northern Irishman - who was in Man United's starting lineup when the Red Devils lost to Coventry in a 2007 League Cup fixture - would seemingly be the first choice to partner Harry Maguire.
However, with there being no guarantees about Evans's fitness, Ten Hag may have no other option but to deploy 19-year-old Willy Kambwala alongside Maguire as Andre Onana's central shield.
Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka's spots out wide are under no threat thanks to Shaw's layoff, and even if McTominay is cleared to play, Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro should pair up in the centre.
Antony and Amad Diallo have put their names in the hat for a starting role thanks to their goals in the quarter-final success over Liverpool; the latter was sent off for taking off his shirt while on a booking but has served his ban in the Premier League.
Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford should win Ten Hag's vote either way, though, as stalwarts Bruno Fernandes and Rasmus Hojlund complete the Red Devils' XI.
Manchester United possible starting lineup:
Onana; Dalot, Kambwala, Maguire, Wan-Bissaka; Casemiro, Mainoo; Garnacho, Fernandes, Rashford; Hojlund
