Copenhagenvs.Chelsea

sportsmole.co.uk, 5 March 2025, 01:45
Chelsea's quest to make good on their promise as Conference League favourites continues on Thursday when they travel to Parken Stadium to take on Danish side Copenhagen in the round of 16.

The hosts narrowly overcame Heidenheim 4-3 in a playoff tie in February to reach the round of 16, whereas the Blues had no difficulty in qualifying having topped the league phase table after winning all six matches.

The winner of the two-legged tie will face either Molde or Legia Warsaw in the quarter-final of the competition, though Chelsea considerable quality should make them favourites to progess.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.

Head-to-head record

Previous meetings: 2

Copenhagen wins: 0

Draws: 1

Chelsea wins: 1

Chelsea have only ever faced Copenhagen in one European campaign, with the Blues getting the better of their Danish opponents in the 2010-11 edition of the Champions League.

The Londoners emerged as 2-0 victors in the round of 16, winning 2-0 away from home in the first leg in February 2011 thanks to two goals from Nicolas Anelka.

Anelka's second was a particularly impressive finish, with the striker receiving the ball at a difficult angle on the right side of the penalty area, but he struck across goal and into the side of the net.

Frank Lampard started in midfield alongside Michael Essien, while Fernando Torres was Anelka's strike partner in the forward line.

Carlo Ancelotti was in charge of Chelsea at the time, and he oversaw a 0-0 draw in the second leg in March, though the Blues boss made notable changes to the team that started the reverse fixture.

Didier Drogba came into the XI in place of Torres, while John Obi Mikel was given the nod in midfield alongside Lampard.

Ancelotti's side would advance into the quarter-finals of the competition but were knocked out by eventual finalists Manchester United after losing 3-1 on aggregate.

Last two meetings

Mar 16, 2011: Chelsea 0-0 Copenhagen (Champions League round of 16 second leg)

Feb 22, 2011: Copenhagen 0-2 Chelsea (Champions League round of 16 first leg)
