The Bluebirds have endured somewhat of an unsettled period this season, the club already going through two managers and spending the campaign on the fringes of a relegation battle in the Championship.
Mark Hudson had initially been chosen as the man to replace Steve Morison and move the Welsh outfit into the mid-table positions, only to win four of his 18 matches in charge.
However, after his sacking on January 14, the Cardiff hierarchy has taken their time to bring in an alternative, rather than appoint from within like has recently been the case.
Lamouchi has now emerged as their chosen candidate, the Frenchman returning to English football after previously having a spell with Nottingham Forest between June 2019 and October 2020.
During his first season at the City Ground, Forest pushed hard for promotion, only to miss out on the playoffs on the final weekend, and Lamouchi never got things back on track.
A spell in Qatar with Al-Duhail helped boost Lamouchi's reputation, winning 21 of his 37 games, but he has been out of work since his departure from that job in August 2021.
Nevertheless, that has not prevented him from getting another high-profile job in the Championship, where he will be assisted by Bluebirds legend Sol Bamba.
Commenting on the appointment, owner Vincent Tan said: "I'd like to welcome Sabri to Cardiff City and offer him my full support. His appointment has come about following a period of serious consideration and reflection as to what is the best for our Club.
"I'm confident that Sabri will be able to deliver what we know this squad is capable of achieving and I look forward to the games that we have ahead of us.
"I'd also like to welcome back Sol to Sabri's coaching staff, a sentiment I know that you will share."
Cardiff currently sit three points clear of the bottom three in the Championship standings, not winning a game in the second tier since a 1-0 triumph at Sunderland on November 5.
After their FA Cup exit to Leeds United, Cardiff are not back in action until January 31 when they square off versus Luton Town.
