Brondbyvs.Aarhus

sportsmole.co.uk, 9 August 2024, 22:22
Picking up a third consecutive league triumph will be the target for Brondby when they entertain the challenge of Aarhus at the Brondby Stadion on Sunday afternoon.

Buoyed by their first win last time out, Aarhus now go in search of back to back victories as they look to spark a resurgence following their difficult start to the campaign.

Match preview

Brondby made light work of a struggling Lyngby Boldklub outfit to score two quickfire first-half goals and claim a routine 2-0 win in Sunday's meeting between the teams at the Lyngby Stadium.

Since a thrilling 3-3 draw against Viborg to kick off the new season, Jesper Sorensen's men have come away with maximum points from their next two domestic outings to sit third in the Danish Superliga table.

While the 11-time champions of Denmark have enjoyed a near-perfect league campaign to date, their European journey is currently in danger of coming to an end after a 3-2 first-leg loss to Legia Warsaw in the Conference League qualifiers.

The Boys from Vestegnen have the opportunity to overturn their aforementioned defeat in next week's second leg as they target a return to the continental scene for the first time in three years.

In the meantime, Sunday's hosts must first navigate a tricky assignment against an opposing side who have lost just one of the last five meetings across all competitions since November 2023.

Aarhus went through a baptism of fire in their first two league games of the campaign, which came against defending champions Midtjylland and their predecessors Copenhagen.

Unsurprisingly, Uwe Rosler's men managed to pick up just one point from a possible six, with a 3-2 defeat to Copenhagen coming off the back of a 1-1 draw against Midtjylland on the opening weekend.

De Hvii'e finally kickstarted their season at the third time of asking last time out courtesy of a comprehensive 4-0 demolition of Sonderjyske, inspired by 35-year-old forward Patrick Mortensen.

Last Friday's win at Ceres Park saw Aarhus move up to seventh spot in the league standings, just two points adrift of Silkeborg in the race to secure a Championship Group place.

Having temporarily weathered an early-season storm, Sunday's visitors will be keen to string together a decent run of results to galvanise their hunt for a first appearance in European football since 1989.

Team News

Long-term absentee Kevin Yakob is still battling a knee problem and will not feature for Aarhus in this one.

The away side will also be without the services of Tobias Molgaard and Nicolai Poulsen, who are unavailable through thigh and muscle injuries respectively.

Last season's leading goalscorer Patrick Mortensen will head into this one on a high having opened his account for the current campaign with a double last time out.

Brondby's Marko Divkovic has not made an appearance since July's pre-season friendly against Sparta Prague due to injury, and the Croatian is still a long way off returning to action.

Twenty-two-year-old Mathias Kvistgaarden has found the back of the net in each of his last four matches, making him one to keep an eye on.

Defender Jordi Vanlerberghe remains a huge doubt for Sunday's game having missed his side's most recent outing through a hamstring problem.

Brondby possible starting lineup:

Pentz; Rasmussen, Lauritsen, Alves; Bischoff, Nartey, Wass, Sebulonsen; Suzuki, Bundgaard, Kvistgaarden

Aarhus possible starting lineup:

Hansen; Dalsgaard, Tingager, Kahl; Beijmo, Anderson, Brandhof, Madsen, Links; Mortensen, Bech

We say: Brondby 3-2 Aarhus

Both teams have developed a knack for playing out high-scoring clashes this season, and we expect Sunday's game to be no different.
