Brentford0 - 0Brighton

sportsmole.co.uk, 3 April 2024, 20:23
Brentford's winless run in the Premier League has stretched to eight matches, with the Bees playing out a goalless draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in West London on Wednesday night.

Both sides had their moments during the contest, but neither could find the back of the net, with the points being shared at the Brentford Community Stadium.

The result has left Brentford 15th in the Premier League table, six points ahead of 18th-placed Luton Town, while Brighton remain ninth, one point behind eighth-placed Newcastle United.

Brighton had the first half-chance of the match in the 10th minute, with Pascal Gross delivering a dangerous cross into the Brentford box, but Joao Pedro could only poke the ball wide of the post.

Soon after, Brentford had an excellent opportunity of their own, with a bright move ending with Keane Lewis-Potter delivering into Yoane Wissa, but he fired wide of the target.

The home side's goalkeeper Mark Flekken was then forced into action in the 13th minute to keep out a header from Joel Veltman, who had met another dangerous delivery from Gross.

Pedro was a threat, and he had another half-chance in the 23rd minute after meeting a cross from Simon Adingra, but the Brighton forward's effort was just over the crossbar.

Ivan Toney had a big chance for the hosts in the 32nd minute after working space inside the Brighton box, but the England international, who missed a number of opportunities against Manchester United last time out, could not find a route past the away side's goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

Flekken then denied Pedro and Facundo Buonanotte in quick succession down the other end, before Adam Lallana sent on wide of the post, with the visitors finishing the first period on the front foot.

Brentford's goalkeeper kept out efforts from Carlos Baleba and Adingra late in the half, before it appeared that Brighton would be given a penalty, with the referee sent across to the monitor after advice from VAR to review an incident involving Wissa and Lewis Dunk, with the two tussling from a corner.

However, Andy Madley stuck with his on-field decision, rejecting the review in the process, much to the frustration of the visitors, with the two teams entering the half-time break on level terms.

Veltman had a half-chance for Brighton early in the second period, but his effort on the half-volley was always rising over the home side's crossbar.

Lallana then missed the target from distance in the 57th minute, with the Seagulls the more productive outfit in the final third of the field, but Brentford were dangerous through Toney and Wissa.

Adingra was next to try his luck for the away side, missing the crossbar from a tight angle in the 63rd minute, before Toney sent a free kick over from a promising position 20 minutes from time.

Igor Julio missed the target with a long-range effort in the 79th minute, before Pedro was denied by Flekken in the 86th minute, with the contest heading towards its final stages.

There was late drama in Brentford's clash with Man United on Saturday, but there were no major incidents in the latter stages of this one, as the points were shared in the capital.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday, with Brentford facing a trip to Champions League-chasing Aston Villa, while Brighton will welcome title hopefuls Arsenal to the Amex.
