The two clubs have been regulars throughout the entire history of the Bundesliga, and have also had some notable showdowns in the domestic cup, but this will be the first time that their paths have crossed on the European stage.
Bayern lead the way in the Bundesliga this season, after seeing Leverkusen steal their crown a year ago, but it is still the visitors who have been stronger in this fixture over the past two years, with Xabi Alonso still yet to taste defeat against the Bavarians.
Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at the head-to-head record and previous meetings between the two sides.
Head-to-head record
Previous meetings: 102
Bayern wins: 60
Draws: 20
Leverkusen wins: 22
Leverkusen are in the midst of a six-game unbeaten streak against Bayern, coinciding with the arrival of Xabi Alonso as manager.
Die Werkself have already won at the Allianz this season, knocking Bayern out of the DFB-Pokal thanks to Nathan Tella's solitary strike after Manuel Neuer had been sent off for Vincent Kompany's side.
Bayern struggled again on their trip to the BayArena in February, registering just two shots across the 90 minutes, but miraculously, they were still able to walk away with a 0-0 draw.
It was certainly a better outcome for Bayern compared to the humbling 3-0 defeat they suffered in Leverkusen a year earlier, when that result all but confirmed Bayer's first-ever Bundesliga title, with Bayern loanee Josip Stanisic among the scorers for Alonso's men.
Leverkusen have come a long way from the side that found themselves 5-0 down away to Bayern inside 37 minutes in 2021, and their record against the Bavarians remains hugely inferior, despite their fine recent streak.
In 46 trips to Bayern in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen have only won four, including just two in 35 since 1990, but the top scorer in this fixture's history was a Die Werkself player - Ulf Kirsten, who managed 11 goals against Bayern while donning the red and black.
Prior to their meeting in the last 16 of the Champions League, some of the most notable meetings between the two were in the Pokal, especially the final in 2020, when a Robert Lewandowski double helped Bayern to a 4-2 win.
Prior to their win in December, Leverkusen had only won one of the seven cup meetings with Bayern, also losing in semi-finals in 2003 and 2018, conceding nine goals over the two defeats.
