Bayern Munichvs.Lyon

sportsmole.co.uk, 17 March 2025, 00:52
Record Women's Champions League winners Lyon Women will travel to Germany for Tuesday's quarter-final first leg against Bayern Munich Women.

The hosts are dreaming of winning the competition for the first time, while the French side are hoping to lift the Women's Champions League trophy for the ninth time in their history.

Match preview

Bayern are set to make their third quarter-final appearance in four seasons after successfully navigating their way through the group phase.

The German side won four, drew one and lost one of their six matches to finish in second place and two points adrift of Group C winners Arsenal.

Bayern will carry momentum into Tuesday's first leg after winning each of their previous seven competitive matches since losing 3-2 to Arsenal in their final match of the Champions League group stage.

Alexander Straus's side moved a step closer to retaining the Frauen-Bundesliga title with a 3-1 win in Friday's home clash against title rivals Wolfsburg, with Pernille Harder netting a brace alongside a Lea Schuller effort to leave the Bavarians six points clear at the top of the table.

That result also maintained Bayern's unbeaten home record in all competitions this season (W11, D1), which will give them a source of encouragement ahead of their first meeting with Lyon since recording a 1-0 home win in the 2021-22 group stage.

Lyon will be hoping to see off Bayern over two legs to keep their hopes alive of winning the Women's Champions League for the first time since 2021-22.

The French champions went out in the quarter-finals in 2022-23, before they made their way to last season's final in Bilbao, where they were ultimately beaten by Catalan giants Barcelona.

They are now preparing to compete in their 16th Women's Champions League quarter-final after taking maximum points from their home and away games against Wolfsburg, Roma and Galatasaray to finish top of Group A.

Lyon have put together a stunning run of form since last month's surprise Coupe de France Feminine exit, winning five consecutive league games by a combined 25-2 scoreline to put them 10 points clear at the top of the Premiere Ligue table.

The eight-time European champions are yet to lose a game in regulation time this season, and they will fancy their chances of maintaining that impressive record in Tuesday's away clash, especially as they kept clean sheets in each of their three away games in the group stage.

Team News

Bayern are unable to call upon the services of Tainara, Katharina Naschenweng, Lena Oberdorf and Georgia Stanway due to injury.

If there are no fresh injury concerns, Straus could decide to select the same lineup that started Friday's 3-1 win over Wolfsburg.

Harder will continue to offer one of Bayern's main attacking threats, having scored 17 goals in 28 competitive appearances this season.

Meanwhile, Lyon boss Joe Montemurro is set to make a few changes after making some alterations for Friday's dominant 8-1 win over Reims.

Vanessa Gilles should come into the side to partner Wendie Renard in defence, while there could also be starting opportunities for Dzsenifer Marozsan and Tabitha Chawinga.

Melchie Dumornay is likely to lead the line for the visitors, with the forward hoping to add to her 16-goal tally for the season.

Bayern Munich Women possible starting lineup:

Mahmutovic; Gwinn, Viggosdottir, Eriksson, Simon; Lohmann, Alara; Zadrazil, Damnjanovic, Buhl; Harder

Lyon Women possible starting lineup:

Endler; Carpenter, Gilles, Renard, Bacha; Marozsan, Egurrolla; Diani, Heaps, Chawinga; Dumornay

We say: Bayern Munich Women 2-2 Lyon Women
