sportsmole.co.uk, 26 January 2025, 10:46
Both Accrington Stanley and Cheltenham Town will be bidding to make it successive wins in League Two when they lock horns at the Crown Ground on Tuesday night.

Accrington have picked up 28 points from their 25 matches this season, which has left them in 20th spot in the League Two table, while Cheltenham are 14th, six points above their opponents in this contest.

Match preview

Accrington boast a record of seven wins, seven draws and 11 defeats from their 25 league matches this season, which has left them in 20th spot in the table, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

The Reds, who finished 17th in the League Two table last season, will enter this contest off the back of a 1-0 success over Crewe Alexandra, with Shaun Whalley netting the only goal of the contest in the 16th minute.

John Doolan's team have struggled in front of their own fans this season, only picking up 14 points from 12 matches, but Cheltenham have found it difficult on their travels, claiming only 10 points from 12 games.

Accrington spent five straight seasons in League One before being relegated at the end of 2022-23, but they are some way off being a challenger for a potential return to the third tier for the 2025-26 campaign.

Cheltenham, meanwhile, will enter this contest off the back of a 2-1 win over Salford City, which made it two victories from their last three league matches and moved them into 14th spot in the division.

The Robins have won nine, drawn seven and lost 10 of their 26 league matches this season to collect 34 points, six points clear of Accrington ahead of this contest.

Cheltenham were relegated from League One last season, finishing down in 21st spot in the third tier, but it has been a struggle for them this term, with the team currently 10 points off the playoff positions.

Michael Flynn's side have only managed two wins from their 12 away League One games this term, conceding 20 times in the process, but Accrington only have 15 home goals to their name during the 2024-25 League Two campaign.

Cheltenham were 2-1 winners over Accrington in the reverse match earlier this season, but the home side recorded a 1-0 victory the the pair last locked horns at the Crown Ground, which was a League One fixture in September 2022.

Team News

Accrington heads coach Doolan could name an unchanged side from the one that took to the field for the first whistle against Crewe due to the impressive nature of the performance and the result.

Whalley has scored seven League Two goals during the 2024-25 campaign, and there will again be a spot in the final third of the field for the Englishman, who needs just one more goal to better his tally from last term.

Ben Woods has four goals and two assists from a midfield spot this term, and the 22-year-old will also be in the XI.

As for Cheltenham, George Miller has seven goals to his name this season, and there will once again be a spot in the final third of the field for the 26-year-old.

Ethon Archer has also been in strong form this term, finding the back of the net on six occasions, and it is likely that he will again operate off the left for the visitors on Tuesday night.

No injuries have been reported from their clash with Salford on Saturday, so it could be a case of same again in terms of team selection, with Jordan Thomas and Tommy Backwell also set to be in the attacking spots.

Accrington Stanley possible starting lineup:

Crellin; Aljofree, Rawson, Ward; Love, Coyle, Woods, Batty; Mooney, Hunter, Whalley

Cheltenham Town possible starting lineup:

Day; Jude-Boyd, Stubbs, Bennett, Bradbury; Kinsella, Young; Thomas, Backwell, Archer; Miller

We say: Accrington Stanley 1-1 Cheltenham Town

Cheltenham have shared the points in three of their last four away matches in League Two, and we can see another stalemate here. Accrington have actually lost three of their last four home games, but Doolan's side should be good enough for a point on Tuesday night.
