Sergio Aguero to make retirement announcement after Barcelona star's heart scare

mirror.co.uk, 20 November 2021, 16:45
The Barcelona forward has already confirmed he will be out of action for at least three months, with medical professionals urging him to undergo a full list of checks after being rushed to hospital last month

Sergio Aguero is reportedly set to announce his retirement with heart problems seemingly ending the Argentine's career at just 33.

Manchester City 's record scorer left the Etihad at the end of last season, joining Barcelona on a two-year deal.

However, Aguero has played just four times for the Blaugrana and earlier this month, it was confirmed he would be out for the foreseeable future under the advice of medical professionals.

In light of speculation that he was set to retire, he offered an update on social media which read: "Given the rumours, I tell them that I am following the indications of the club's doctors, doing tests and treatment and seeing my progress within 90 days. Always positive."

Aguero was rushed to hospital following Barca's 1-1 draw with Alaves at the end of October after suffering from chest pains and breathing difficulties.

According to Spanish outlet SPORT, Aguero was then diagnosed with a 'cardiac arrhythmia' or irregular heartbeat.

Further checks were then scheduled for Aguero and journalist Gerard Romero has claimed that those have led to the decision that he will retire from football.

The report claims Barcelona have been made aware and a press conference will be pencilled in next week to confirm his plans for the future.

His Argentina team-mates paid tribute to the striker ahead of their recent World Cup qualifier with Brazil.

Lionel Messi and Co. were pictured with a banner before kick-off which had a picture of their compatriot along with the message, "We are all with you Kun".

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has urged his former player to put his health first in a passionate plea to the club legend.

"We wish him well from all the people here at Manchester City, we wish him a safe recovery," Guardiola said.

"The time doesn't matter. Health and life are much more important than anything else.

"We wish him as speedy and safe recovery as possible and he comes back, if possible, to play again, otherwise to enjoy his life and what he has done, and to be careful and be safe for the rest of his life."

The forward's issue comes just months after Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch whilst playing for Denmark at Euro 2020.

The playmaker stopped breathing after suffering cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated on the pitch before being rushed to hospital, where it was eventually confirmed that he would need to be fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD).

He will not play for club side Inter Milan in Serie A this season.
