Bayern Munich 1-1 Borussia Mönchengladbach
Goals: 0-1 Thuram (43'), 1-1 Sane 83' (assist: Musiala)
Having scored 21 times across their first four competitive matches of the season, Bayern laid siege to the Gladbach goal for long periods in the first half. Ko Itakura was forced into evasive action from the kick-off to deny Sadio Mane a shot at goal, before Sommer pulled of a superb diving save from Dayot Upamecano's rasping drive. Joe Scally intervened to prevent Alphonso Davies connecting with a Benjamin Pavard cross, while Thomas Müller went within a whisker of turning in a Joshua Kimmich cross. Mane had a goal ruled out for an offside in the build-up against Sane, who volleyed narrowly over moments later. Itakura then slid in at the feet of Sane to deny a certain goal, before the offside flagged discounted another routine Mane finish. Despite the one-way traffic, Gladbach forged ahead late in the half when Upamecano inadvertently helped Christoph Kramer's clearance on to Marcus Thuram. The Borussia forward raced away and coolly dispatched past the otherwise untested Manuel Neuer.
Bayern went close to redressing the balance soon after the restart, but Sommer got between Müller and Coman's probing cross. After Itakura drew a simple save from Neuer following a corner, Sommer continued to frustrate the record champions at the other end. Müller helped a Coman cross into the six-yard box for Mane, who found the outstretched left leg of the Gladbach No.1 with his first attempt and the Swiss stopper's right foot on the rebound. Sane was the next Bayern player to come up short against Sommer after being played clean through on goal by a sublime Kimmich through-ball. Entering the fray alongside Jamal Musiala in the 70th minute, Serge Gnabry could do no better with a fierce strike from inside the area. Pavard picked out Müller with the loose ball, but Sommer was again equal to his header and Pavard's rising strike soon after. Kimmich hit the foot of a post direct from a corner, before Sane swept in a Musiala cross to break Sommer's resolve. One final world-class save to thwart substitute Matthijs de Ligt ensured Gladbach went home with a point.
