Wycombe match stopped as Akinfenwa confronts MK Dons fans over derogatory chant

Wycombe Wanderers' League One fixture against MK Dons was temporarily stopped on Saturday after Adebayo Akinfenwa was subjected to a derogatory chant from the visitors' fans.

Akinfenwa started the game as a substitute on the bench, but the veteran striker was targeted with abuse as he warmed up on the side of the pitch during the first-half.

The 39-year-old then walked over to confront the away supporters, with the Chairboys man visibly angry after the exchange.

It was reported that at least one supporter was removed from the stands following the incident.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth was among those asking the supporters to stop singing the chant before the game was temporarily halted.

MK Dons issued an appeal to their fans on Twitter urging them to refrain from singing the chant.

"We ask that the #MKDons fans please refrain from singing that chant," the club's official account tweeted during the match.

"Let's get behind the boys."

At the time of writing, Wycombe had not addressed the chant on social media accounts.

The game marred the events in the first half at Adams Park before play resumed, with Wycombe going into the interval behind after a goal from Scott Twine after 13 minutes.

MK Dons now face an anxious wait to see if there is further punishment to come from the Football Association, which could depend on if Wycombe make an official complaint.

Akinfenwa played for MK Dons' rivals AFC Wimbledon 2014 and 2016 before linking up with the League One outfit Wycombe.

The popular striker, known as a die-hard Liverpool fan whose admirers include Jurgen Klopp, has been a loyal servant to the club with 56 goals in 236 appearances.

However, the striker has only played a bit-part role for Ainsworth's side this season, making just three starts from his 21 appearances and scoring four goals.

Ainsworth recently hailed the forward for his contributions to the squad, despite his lack of action, having penned a new one-year deal in the summer.

"I'm very humbled to have him in my side," Ainsworth told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"Bayo is unbelievable for this club. He's the record league goalscorer for Wycombe Wanderers, that doesn't come by accident, that doesn't come by fluke.

"He's an exceptional player, an exceptional talent, a brilliant leader and above all that an awesome human being."
