Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst admitted the Red Devils were fortunate to see Nottingham Forest's goal chalked off by VAR during the first-leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
Forest thought they had scored an all important equaliser against the Red Devils after Marcus Rashford had opened the scoring with a delightful solo effort, but Sam Surridge was deemed offside just before he guided his strike beyond David de Gea. The decision prompted fury among the home faithful packed inside the City Ground.
In the end, further goals from Weghorst and Bruno Fernandes meant United came away with a 3-0 win and one foot already in the final, with the second-leg at Old Trafford still to play.
The Netherlands international is currently on loan at United from Championship table-toppers Burnley and got on the scoresheet for the first time since arriving earlier this month just before the game was paused for half-time. After firing blanks against both Crystal Palace and Arsenal, Weghorst will be overjoyed at getting off the mark.
After the game, the 30-year-old striker explained how was happy to net his first United goal, telling Sky Sports: "It's always special and you want to score goals. You prefer to have this first one as quick as possible so I was really happy. I think it was an important moment also. It gave us a good feeling at the break."
However, Weghorst did go on to concede that United did not have things their own way as they'd have liked, even after Rashford's opener.

"We started well and had a great goal," he explained. "We didn't have the control like we wanted it and made it too much up and down after.
"We were lucky their goal was disallowed then to make it 2-0 before half-time was important. I just turned to the goal hoping for a rebound and it came exactly like this. It was nice.
"We were not happy with the way we had played in the first half, we wanted more control. That's something we did in the second half and with the 3-0 at the end it made it even better."
Weghorst has another great chance to add to his United tally on Saturday, when the Red Devils welcome mid-table Championship side Reading, who are now managed by Old Trafford icon Paul Ince.
For all of Weghorst's effort, it remains the case that United are likely to look for a new striker in the summer transfer window and sign someone they view as a more long-term option to lead the line.
With that being said, there is still plenty of football left to be played this term and plenty of time for Weghorst to make himself a cult hero at Old Trafford.
