Weghorst hasn't played in the Bundesliga since the Matchday 8 loss to Union Berlin, but returned to the starting line-up against Red Bull Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League in midweek following a period in isolation. The Dutchman managed 63 minutes as the Wolves recorded their first European win of the campaign, and second in a row under new head coach Florian Kohfeldt after last weekend's 2-0 triumph at Bayer Leverkusen. Lukas Nmecha scored in both games to take his season tally to a team-leading five goals in all competitions - one more than Weghorst, whose last effort fell in the 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt on 19 September. Maximilian Philipp completed the three-man attack against Leverkusen, but Yannick Gerhardt assumed the role of left-sided forward in Europe. Maxence Lacroix is suspended, meanwhile, with Sebastiaan Bornauw expected to deputise in Kohfeldt's three-man defence.
While seventh-placed Wolfsburg hadn't won in eight prior to Kohfeldt's appointment, Augsburg snapped a winless run spanning six matches with their 4-1 success over VfB Stuttgart. Markus Weinzierl's side came from behind to almost double their season total for goals in a result that put four points between themselves in the relegation play-off spot and the automatic drop zone. Alfred Finnbogason marked his first Bundesliga start since April with an assist for substitute Florian Niederlechner and a first league goal since February 2020. The injury-hit Iceland striker should retain his place in attack, alongside Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Andi Zeqiri. UEFA U21 Euro winner Niklas Dorsch could return to the midfield at the expense of Tobias Strobl, but left-back Iago remains a major doubt, with Mads Pedersen set to continue in the Brazilian's stead.
