Wolfsburg part company with head coach Florian Kohfeldt

Fourth last season, 2008/09 champions Wolfsburg struggled for long periods in 2021/22, ultimately finishing 12th.

"After a thorough analysis of the season, we came to the mutual decision to part ways," explained Wolfsburg managing director Jörg Schmadtke. "We regret how it's worked out, but would like to thank Florian Kohfeldt for helping us out in a difficult situation and securing our top-flight status. We wish him all the best."

Wolfsburg were top of the Bundesliga after four games, but slipped to ninth on the back of four straight losses that cost Mark van Bommel his job. Former Werder Bremen coach Kohfeldt was appointed in his stead, and initially steadied the ship with a four-match unbeaten run.

However, the Wolves lost their next eight in a row in all competitions, exiting the UEFA Champions League groups in the process. Inconsistencies left them looking nerviously over their shoulders at the relegation zone until Matchday 32 of the 34-fixture campaign.

"I took over the team at a difficult time," reflected Kohfeldt, who oversaw nine wins, five draws and 14 defeats, albeit ending his tenure on a four-match unbeaten run. "There were many uncertainties, but we managed to secure our place in the Bundesliga with room to spare and make some progress. I wish the club all the best."
