What do Scotland need to qualify for Euro 2024? Tartan Army close despite Spain defeat

talksport.com, 13 October 2023, 08:36
Scotland can still seal their place at Euro 2024 this weekend despite their unbeaten run coming to an end.

The Tartan Army's historic start to their qualification campaign suffered its first bump after a 2-0 loss against Spain.

Scotland won their first five games to sit top of Group A, but goals from Alvaro Morata and Oihan Sancet consigned them to defeat after VAR had controversially ruled out a Scott McTominay stunner.

Steve Clarke's men still have their own destiny in their hands and could book their place this weekend without even playing.

When can Scotland qualify for Euro 2024?

Scotland's defeat to Spain coupled with Norway's 4-0 win over Cyprus means they will have to wait for qualification until another day.

However, if Norway fail to beat Spain on Sunday then Scotland's place in Germany will be sealed.

Should Erling Haaland and co manage to stun La Roja then the Scots will have to wait until the November international break to confirm their spot.

Scotland needs just two more points from their remaining two qualifiers to cement their place in next year's finals.

Scotland remain on 15 points which guarantees that they finish in one of the two qualification spots should the Norwegians drop points.

"We came here to show that we were a good team and I think tonight we showed that," Clarke said after losing to Spain.

"Tonight was the first chance to qualify, maybe the result on Sunday night goes in our favour and we can qualify from that. But we don't qualify because of that result, we qualify because of the work we've done to have 15 points from six games.

"That's why we will qualify if a result goes our way over the weekend. If it doesn't go our way and Norway win, then we have a very realistic chance for the two games in November to win this section and that's what we'll focus on.

"We can be pleased with how we performed but the lads are really disappointed that we've lost the game because we didn't come here to lose."
