The England midfielder, playing out of position, managed to keep one of the world's best strikers quiet and was unlucky to end up on the losing side.
Having turned heads at Euro 2020, playing every match for the Three Lions, Phillips continues to amaze, despite the Whites' struggles on the pitch.
And former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy was left stunned by his performance in defence.
"I've got to give Phillips a mention," Murphy told talkSPORT.
"I know he wasn't best pleased about playing at the back but what about how good he was at centre-half, marking Kane? What about how clever he was, knowing when to step in front and when to step off?
"What about how comfortable he was in possession? What a player!"
It's not the first time Phillips has played at the back under Marcelo Bielsa.
The Argentine was the one who converted the 25-year-old into a more defensive midfielder upon his arrival at Elland Road.
Nonetheless, Phillips was still left rather bemused by Bielsa's decision to use him in defence on Sunday.
He told Sky Sports: "To be honest, I don't know why he did it."
